at the checkout:*All these girls and women running, I think to myself you’ll wreck your knees AND your hips. Huh! Catch me running!*
Being a big nosed know it all running bore, I put her straight. She didn’t like it, so she kept me waiting five minutes while she slowly packed her enormous shop, pausing hand on hip to chat to the woman on the till. I couldn’t have cared less as I had nothing else to do and found the whole drama highly amusing.
I wonder how long it will take for the old myth of runners knees to die. I have pretty hefty damage to one knee and haven’t had a single running related injury so far - touch wood!
It's not a scots word, it's etymology is from the 14th century and is middle english. Only reason I know that is that is was used by a poet I was studying to describe the moon, probably larkin but I can't recall, may have been auden.. google not helping my memory.
See, now I'm thinking us Scots have taken a beautiful poetic word and ruined it by using it with such a base meaning! You never cease to amaze me Pink, the range of knowledge you have tucked away. Can't help you with poetry I'm afraid, but I can tell that will pick at the edge of your mind for a bit. 🤨
Meanwhile, back to running, how's the training going, are you back on top?
Sadly no. Think I may have pulled a calf muscle too 😐. I think in the poem it was used to describe the moon, eg 'he gazed at a crudded moon' so the meaning was the same
Not so good. At least you can strengthen at the gym.
Crudded in that sense, I would've taken to mean "pitted" rather than $h!t, but hey what do I know. A friend of my is a poet and has an involvement with Stanza doing the fringe and suchlike, but it hasn't rubbed off on me at all. Too straight-thinking I guess.
I'm hoping my calf is just adjusting to the extras workload after increasing to a fourth run and adding intervals and hills. I've cut back and took 5 days rest last week. Feeling like I should be healed after that! I'm assuming the added workload was your problem as well, albeit on a whole different scale from mine!!!??? It's a shame as your schedule was going so well.
I do 4 sets of 25 calf raises at 120 kilos on the leg press, not sure I can do much more. I think all my recent issues stemmed from changing shoes. So I have a new pair identical to my old ones on order, so I will reset a baseline on those and try to rebuild up from there. I tried to do 5k the other night and only managed 3k as I had to stop every 200m and walk because my calf was so tight :(. Have been foam rollering and working it with the roller wand and it all feels fine but when I run it doesn't feel great.. but I have been having varying issues all over the place so can't really pin it down yet. Will keep trying though.. running is such a fragile thing.
Just mentioned elsewhere that my calves are feeling a lot better after I rolled them and did some yoga poses today. Downward dog was great for the gastrocnemius and the soleus. Not all stretches were official yoga moves, but I know what my leg needs! Felt every step of the 7K, but niggle rather than pain so thankfully I didn't have to stop, but I'll need to keep an eye on it.
Yes I daren’t tell my brother-in-law I’m now going from 5-10k as he’s worried about my knees. But a lot of what I’ve read said that post-menopausal women should do more exercise to strengthen their bones and should do exercise to get the heart beating. With this and Pilates I’m hoping that I’m helping my knees and hip bones. My physio was very keen for me to run.
Were you wearing running gear at the shop? Seems very rude if you were.
I’ve been forbidden by my beautiful (runner) daughter to wear running gear anywhere but running 😂😂😂
Running apparently actually regenerates cartilage in the knees. Since I’ve started running again, my legs have strengthened, I feel pain and cold less and feel generally stronger 🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️
No, I just meant that I haven't really followed him much since. I'll see if I can find it.
I agree that running is good for your knees and that it's good for the cartilage. I just understood that you can't actually grow it back once it's gone.
I was operating under the belief that as cartilage doesn't have a blood supply and is effectively inert that there was no way for it to regrow. There is hope on the horizon though israel21c.org/cartilage-reg... though it sounds like there growth scaffold is providing the blood supply,
Hilarious! Good on you Flick! I'd have done exactly the same thing. I regularly get the same comments from my dad. I'm with you on the strong knee front: I have ACL & lat meniscus damage from a skiing incident when I was 17. Always had some kind of niggle until I started running. No problems now, just much more toned, strong knees! Loving the trademark funky leggings btw! 😉
Me too, much stronger legs and no Biggleswade (lol I’m leaving that auto correct gem- should read niggles). The pic is from a post in the summer when I got new shoes, but unthought they went with the topic. Wish I’d been wearing them in Sainsbury’s today
It's on the way to Mordor(luton) from cambridge. Maybe the americans had it on their flightplans as a place they could drop unneeded munitions on the way back from bomb runs in germany.
I just love that you got her told! I didn't try running for a very long time because of that very myth and would only power-walk, to save my knees!
Glad to hear you've avoided injury and are going from strength to strength!
I'm loving today's outfit... You're so trendy 😘

I didn’t run for 52 years because of being told that it would destroy my injured leg.
The outfit was a photo from the summer but apt for the post as shows knees and attitude 😊
Haha good on you Flick - love it! I have never felt stronger or healthier since I started running and have heard how good it is for women of a 'certain' age haha! Go you! x
Ha! Love it. Wish I'd seen that! My husband had a knee replaced last year. He was a runner but also a sporting "gladiator" and played loads of different sports. All his consultants told him it was squash and cricket that probably did the damage because of all the twisting, not the running.
People who say things like this don't know the facts and are just using an excuse not to make the effort. Running is hard which is why most people don't do it. But we do 🙂
Mr I Don’t Snore has wrecked his knees, but it was playing a lot of football in his youth, with all the twisting and turning.
And you’re right about not making the effort. She was bragging about eating too much of some food or other, I didn’t catch which, but bound to be one of the horribly unhealthy options in her trolley. Not that I’m averse to a treat among my healthy eating, but there was hardly ANYTHING healthy in what I heard the cashier say was a £90 shop 😯
Haha! I overheard someone in Sainsbury’s saying to her shopping companion that ‘exercise clothes’ were not appropriate for shopping in ... I assume she was referring to me as I had popped in for a couple of bits after completing my local park run - still in my sweaty running gear! 😆 I wasn’t brave enough to respond but wish I had now 😊
What business was it of hers? I would have been tempted to say I'd just been running, and how far could she run Anyway, I've seen lots of women shopping in lycra, who clearly have never run in their lives, or gone to the gym (the sling back stiletto sandals usually give that one away!).
Running and shopping is something I do regularly. Back pack on, plus lightweight nylon bags, and I’m off. If I buy too much I have to schlepp back home. The only dress code in our supermarkets is men must wear a top and no nightwear, which is reasonable I think I look ok in my run gear, as do you Flick. Most of my gear is Lidl anyway so I have no reservations about going in there wearing it 🤷♀️ My back packs are theirs as well I go into mcD’s sometimes post long run, for a drink, by which point i’m past caring if I might be sweaty.
Which is all as it should be 😊 But on that occasion I hadn’t been running. Going in there and confronting her Lycra clad would have been the icing on the cake 🎂
Good for you, FlickM3. You tell 'em ! We all need to spread the word about becoming fitter to reduce the costs to the N.H.S., to improve our own lives but , above all, to take responsibility for our own physical and mental well-being. Good on yer, girl ! More power to your elbow, no, I mean knee.
It's ridiculous and a very insidious myth. that trust me I'm a doctor bloke tested people walking and running on some sort of digitally linked pressure surface, and they found that walking pouts more pressure on joints than running.
Wow. I love those leggings. I wish it would be Ok for men to wear them. I think people would just look at me like I’m crazy 😂
you should of told them of runners. How we’re all knackered!! 🤣
Heh, it's taken me a couple of days to come up with "oh? Where did you train as a physiotherapist? Or is it a sports science degree you have, where you learnt all that?"
