OMG I was nearly run over.

My fault as I only looked one way crossing the road, I was so engrossed in my music and on avoiding traffic whilst looking one way and before crossing the rest of the road but thought there was a middle reservation but there wasn’t a middle reservation as such, just a small patch of grass, a car had to make an emergency stop to avoid me. I was really angry with myself for being so stupid. I had my earphones in and it has certainly put me off wearing them again as I feel I wasn’t concentrating properly on the traffic. I tell you, I was nearly a goner. I needed avg and t when I got home and I rarely drink alcohol. Be careful everyone, please be vigilant in traffic.

A near miss Agelesslass, I walk a lot with music but I am also a cyclist but NEVER have music on when cycling. I graduated in June, I only had music on during my running and if I remember correctly it was my second post graduation run, all off road and with no roads to cross either. You must have got an awful fright as you have told us in your post. I would advise you to only have music on OFF. ROAD like in a park where there is no traffic or if you live in the countryside there will be many quiet country lanes or fields.

I will be very careful in future, am still in shock. No more music when I’m running on roads, NEVER. Thanks AlMorr.

It is a con against wearing earphones etc whilst running ... personally I prefer it and take extra care at road crossing etc

There are earphones called AfterShokz.. that are bone conduction that don't go in the ears so you still can hear other noises..

Thankyou. Don’t think I will wear any earphones from now on.

So glad you are OK agelesslass. A lesson learnt there I think. Have another g&t . 😬

I will, I am having flashbacks. Thanks for replying.

This is why I invested in aftershokz bone conducting headphones for running specifically so I could hear traffic and other people/bicycles etc, they work really well and do not effect your peripheral audio at all.

Thanks so much for the advice, will look at info on these headphones. Appreciate your reply.

No worries. I really should write a review for the forum. I got them because I cross a guided busway on my runs and it'd be so easy to get hit by a bus at 70mph, I doubt my brief introduction to unpowered flight would end well 🤪

🤣🤣 never mind reviewing headphones...with one liners like that you should be on the comedy circuit!! 😂😂

Easy mistake to make, pleased that you weren't hurt and have lived to tell the tale!

I am lucky that I can run off road every run as I love running solo with just my thoughts and OMD for company x x

Thanks so much, you are lucky to be able to run like that.

Thanks, I intend to after that scare. Just wanted to warn other runners to take care too.

Oh wow, how scary for you. ☹️ Hope the G&T helped a bit. I haven’t had to cross a busy road yet, but since I always wear headphones, I’ll definitively think twice about doing so when that situation occurs.

I hope the driver was understanding and didn’t have a go at you. That would have made the situation 10 times worse I’d have thought.

Take care. 😀

Thanks for your reply. The driver was shocked like me, felt really sorry for her, good job it wasn’t a lorry as it wouldn’t have been able to stop. Doesn’t bear thinking about, take care out there cheekychipmunks.

No, that absolutely doesn’t bear thinking about ...... 😩

I think we’ll all try to be a little safer after your post. What a shame you had to go through a situation like that. Hope you’re ok.

That’s why I posted it to warn my fellow runners on this site. Everyone take heed please.

This happened to me when I was doing the programme. I was so engrossed in what Laura was saying that I forgot to look at what was coming and just stepped onto the road. Mind you, it was a quiet road but even so. A car came up from nowhere and had to swerve to miss me. It doesn't half scare you though doesn't it?

I've never worn headphones on roads since. Not worth it. Glad you're ok.

Thanks, I won’t be wearing them in future either. It can happen in a split second, I’m so grateful to be alive and well today.

I dont run to music because i hate it, but this would be a contra indication for me. I'm constantly scared of traffic, which goes so fast on some of the roads I have to cross. Really glad you are ok and in one piece x

Thanks FlickM3, no more music for me, I’ve learnt my lesson and nearly cost me dearly.

in reply toAgelesslass

I love music just not when running. So much to listen to and take notice of when running, and I find music distracts or colours my mood falsely rather than let me experience being in the moment

Yikes! Glad you’re ok. 😳❤️❤️

I like to just wear earphones in one ear, and to not have the volume up too much. Seems to help make me more aware on roads, and able to hear cyclists coming up behind me on joint walking/cycle tracks.

That’s a good idea too. Thanks very much.

Hey. Glad to hear you can't to no harm. One of the reasons I don't listen to music when I run is because I can't hear anything else. I switched over to Audio books and can hear everything else. You could try that.
