Not been running for 9 days now as came down with chest infection. I knew something was going on as the week b4 I stopped running I could only run for 5 mins b4 I had to stop with struggling for breath. That happened Mon & Wed and on the Friday I struggled through 2 miles and basically stopped every 50 yds on the last mile.
Never mind the antibiotics & steroids have kicked in and I think by the end of the week I will be out there again. I have been spending most of my time just sat down and it does seem for runners of all ages that core exercises are essential.
problem I found was the amount of variation of exercises to do. You have exercises like Bird Dog, Dead Bug,Knee Side Plank With drive,Floor Wiper and lots of exotic but basically impractical exercises to attempt. Bird Dog, Balance on one knee and hand then put other arm in front of you and other leg behind you.
You got to be joking!! I doubt if I could even do the balancing act let alone the rest of exercise. The point is no doubt the younger ones can do these exercises no problems but us older ones would be struggling or at least I would.
It seems something like 2 x 15 min exercise routines is about right so does any of the more mature runners have a routine they do at home they would like to share. No cycling or gym work just exercises at home.
I have got to be truthful and say one reason I have not done any core exercises or at least certain ones is I have had 2 groin hernias. The 1st one was over 50 years ago and 2nd must be 20 years ago, same place. If I do something like sit ups or crunches I can feel it pulling as it is still weak so have to be careful.
Dead Bug as long as I do not push it is ok but any other suggestion would be great,I do have a set of dumbbells. I think I have tried so many different exercises that just cannot get into a routine or know which ones are best for senior runners.Thank you
