Give your neck a break during core exercises

In support of @Realfoodieclub's Core Program posts, here are some tips on how to avoid neck strain when doing core exercises:

1) Don't tense your neck; keep neck muscles relaxed while crunching.

2) Fold your arms across your chest instead of putting them behind your head.

3) Make sure your neck is not jutting out. Your head, neck and abs should be in one straight line.

4) Concentrate on the ceiling to prevent your head from lifting forward. Imagine that you have an apple tucked under your chin – allowing for space between your chin, neck and chest.

Doing core exercises doesn't have to be a pain in the neck! :)

Good advice. I have a tendency to tighten the muscles around my neck when I exercise so I must remember these tips! Thank you.

Your photo reminds me of one I took of a giraffe once and I waited for ages for it to come close to me and then when I looked at the photo afterwards all I had were the ears 😟

Great post, thank you. I have a tendency to strain my neck especially as core work gets harder. Love the picture. 😀

This post is timely.....as I did the exercises this evening I noticed a lot of tension in my neck. Maybe this indicates a weakness in the core? I will try to relax my neck and tighten the core. Thanks for the tips.
