10k complete but no finesse today.

This week did not go to plan before my first event. I spent much of this week feeling awful with high temperature, sweats, chills, achy joints, headaches, shots and sneezes that running anywhere seemed impossible. The virus seemed on its way out on Thursday and I was back to work on Friday so not even a mini joggette was managed. After much deliberation of whether I would start or not with my cough and green shots, the decision was made to just go! Me and the family walked the 10 minutes to the event with plenty of toilet time to be had, gosh how many nervous wee's do you need! The warm up started just before the event and I realised that I had very little energy, this worried me that the run was going to be hard work. Warm up over we headed over to the start. My original plan was to start with the 60 pacer and hopefully finish somewhere there but due to my health status, I started at the back. It was a chipped event so no big deal. The gun went and we were off with a planned slow start for me. I overtook many ladies running at the back as we went up round the hill for the first time. My legs were heavy but not bad and my lungs surprisingly worked despite the coughing. The first hill was good and went without issue with a lovely downhill stretch, I managed to keep smiling and kept in with a group of ladies who were going my pace. At the end of the hill the 5k runners went off leaving the 10k runners to head off round the bottom pond. My nose was running faster than my legs and I was fast running out of tissues for green shots, not a pretty sight. We rounded the pond onto the grass which was rough in places after the recent festival so I took this easy on my ankles. Back onto the tarmac and off past the café and round the corner onto the path to the pub. Oh it was tempting to stop for a cool refreshing drink but no on and up past the play area to the much awaited horrible incline. I took it slow and steady with my family there to high five along the way. At the top I felt like a chuffing train as my lungs were not on form so a very slow joggette over the top for the decline down hill. I knew I had another lap to go so took it steady down the hill, 5k had seemed a struggle but my mojo was coming back. I had passed more runners and stuck with a runner from a local club to pace me for a bit. I had more coughing and my wet tissues were just hanging in there, poor lady from the running club probably thought I was a 60 a day smoker behind her! Down the hill to the crossroads and I could see the 5k finishers and the finish line but no I had another lap around the bottom pond and that ruddy long slow incline to do yet. Now I had a stitch, breath through your nose and out of your mouth they say which isn't going to happen with a beak full of snot. So the stitch stayed with me. I was doing well, keeping it steady round the pond and over the rough grass. The lady runner and I were dancing for position which was fun and kept my mind occupied before we found ourselves at the hill again. I slowed to walk for a few seconds to see if I could sort my stitch out but alas not. I ran again slowly up the hill high fiving my kids as I went passing the running lady who was now walking. I grabbed some water at the water stop but they has removed the lid, now I was wet as well as sweaty! Trying to run up a hill and drink is not a trick I have learnt so I slowed at the top of the hill for a drink. Off I went round the top and down the hill, oh what a treat on the legs. Finally I see the crossroads oh but the sign is straight on for 10k. Suddenly my heart filled with dread that I have another lap, surely not. A quick check of the watch suggested I should head for the finish, just as the marshal took the sign down, phew! Just 200m to go, I can see the finish now but my legs want to stop, no no no, keep going nice and steady. The lady runner was on a sprint but I had no reserve and let her go. I managed as fast a pace as I could through the finish line. My gun time was 1.01.35 yet my chip time was 1.01.12 which meant I was actually can ahead of the two ladies in front of me! That is my new 10k pb. It was a hard run and I wouldn't recommend running with a cough and a beak full of snot. I have my first bling and have celebrated with homemade apple cake. Now for a well earned rest, children permitting.

I think I may have chatted to you in the queue for the toilet ! Well done on your PB. I missed one by 2 seconds can you believe. Wasn't it a great event ? So well organised, lovely marshalls and a brilliant goodie bag. Definitely on the list for next year :)

Yes I think we may well have chatted in the loo queue! It was a good event and well organised, I would sign up to this next year too. Hopefully I won't fall prey to the kids bugs before the event next year so I could enjoy it more. I still hate the long hill despite my training runs being there! Sounds like you had a good run too, so close to a new pb. Darn those 2 seconds!

Thank you. In training i was finding running a bit tough and wondered whether 10 miles (post 10k) was an option for my white sticks, sorry for the glare in the pics! I need more mental grit and fitness should anyone have some going spare........

Well done!😀🏃🏽‍♀️🥇I was looking out for this post and hoping you had made it! I bet it did feel tough, given you have been unwell but you did it...and in a very respectable time too! 👍 Rest up well now and get those kids to help out! Bet they're proud of Mum today! 🙂x

Well done - not easy when you have had a good run up but after a week like yours that was a great feat. A very impressive time too.

Thank you, I am very happy with the time! I had training 10k times of 64, 65 or recently 63 minutes so this was unexpected.

Well done for doing this even though you had been ill and an even bigger well done for the time. That's fab! And your first bling is lovely, just lovely 🤗

in reply to Irishprincess

I love the bling, it has sparkly purple in it which can't be seen on the photo. Official photos are through and I am very happy (I know I wasn't so happy during parts of the event lol).

Great write up and what a shame about the cold! I'm not sure I'd have got through 10k with a cold like that so I don't think you're short of any grit whatsoever. Congrats on first bling and a super excellent time :)
