I haven’t been on a treadmill since last year. I had and injury and as I was recovering, a few minutes on one set of off in a big way and I haven’t ventured back since. Not that it’s a big deal-I prefer running outside but it’s nice to have the option for a quick fifteen minutes in between gym classes if I wanted to. That was the main thing I wasn’t liking-I wanted to be able to make a positive choice about what site for run I was doing and not be limited by a pretty irrational fear of hurting myself again.
Well, I am happy to report that this morning, it was time to run past the treadmill gremlins and leave them well behind! I had half an hour before my weights class which seemed like the perfect opportunity. The run itself was totally unspectacular. Five minutes warm up. Fifteen minutes running. Five minutes cool down walk. That was it. I had to work hard to distract myself from thinking about my knee all the time. I was pleased I’d remember headphones and a podcast. The time passed quickly and I was surprised how easy it felt compared to my usual runs-probably because where I live is rural hills and trails. A nice change. It wa great to get off it feeling great and actually looking forward to a few more treadmill runs instead of actively worrying about whether I’d be ok or not. That meant a lot. It has really surprised me how long the mental impact of having had an injury in the past has hung around, long after the injury itself seems better.
A nice bonus was that Garmin awarded me a badge for running on Global Running Day. I’ve no idea what that is, but I’m more pleased than I should be with some meaningless digital bling. Anyone else the same? Anyone else running today? Have fun whether you’re indoors or on the (no longer dreaded) treadmill like me!
