Slaying the treadmill demons on Global Running Day

I haven’t been on a treadmill since last year. I had and injury and as I was recovering, a few minutes on one set of off in a big way and I haven’t ventured back since. Not that it’s a big deal-I prefer running outside but it’s nice to have the option for a quick fifteen minutes in between gym classes if I wanted to. That was the main thing I wasn’t liking-I wanted to be able to make a positive choice about what site for run I was doing and not be limited by a pretty irrational fear of hurting myself again.

Well, I am happy to report that this morning, it was time to run past the treadmill gremlins and leave them well behind! I had half an hour before my weights class which seemed like the perfect opportunity. The run itself was totally unspectacular. Five minutes warm up. Fifteen minutes running. Five minutes cool down walk. That was it. I had to work hard to distract myself from thinking about my knee all the time. I was pleased I’d remember headphones and a podcast. The time passed quickly and I was surprised how easy it felt compared to my usual runs-probably because where I live is rural hills and trails. A nice change. It wa great to get off it feeling great and actually looking forward to a few more treadmill runs instead of actively worrying about whether I’d be ok or not. That meant a lot. It has really surprised me how long the mental impact of having had an injury in the past has hung around, long after the injury itself seems better.

A nice bonus was that Garmin awarded me a badge for running on Global Running Day. I’ve no idea what that is, but I’m more pleased than I should be with some meaningless digital bling. Anyone else the same? Anyone else running today? Have fun whether you’re indoors or on the (no longer dreaded) treadmill like me!

I didn't realise today was Global Running Day, but I know now MissUnderstanding, thank you for telling us, I have never ran on a treadmill except when I was getting a gait analysis for my first pair of running shoes.

This morning I ran 8K in a time of 59:59, one second under a hour, I am now back home watching the D-day programme on BBC 1 from Southsea, Portsmouth.

Happy to be of service! To be totally honest? I had no idea until garmin surprised me with the badge so I can’t claim too much credit!!

Congratulations on your run! That’s a great distance and a great time too!

Yes! Well my Apple Watch reminded me about it on Monday, so have 2 badges - one from Nike and one from Apple. Did an early 5km this morning. (and I also used to hate the treadmill but have found love with it and do my sprintervals on there quite regularly).

Two for the price of one. Bargain!!! Extra bling is always a bonus. Congratulations on your early 5km-what a great way to start the day. It’s so nice getting to lunchtime knowing you’ve already run and your daily steps are ticked off/well on the way!!

Next time I think I’ll try and interval run. Long runs will always stay outdoors but I’m definitely up for a bit of experimenting. I used to be quite adventurous on a treadmill but just lost my confidence. It’s great to have options again!

I availed of a special 3 month offer at a new gym back in February and started to do a few runs on the treadmill after doing the weights. I almost came off it once because I was a bit bored and decided to see how far back I could go before I reached the end🤣... I soon found out and had to do some rapid correction. I am now trying a few programs and inclines and finding it quite good.

It's probably a lot to do with the inside environment, but I find that I need to work harder and sweat a great deal more running on a treadmill compared to outside. Hopefully it will help with dropping a few kilos.

I can just imagine myself doing the same and nearly coming off the back!! I stupidly decided to try and check my emails during a warm up walk once and nearly came a cropper-never again! I’ve got a gym membership too-my physio made me! I really like it though. I find paying the money every month motivates me to go and it’s nice to have another way to make the most of it by jumping on the treadmill for a bit.

“Hot” exercise classes seem to be a thing here. I’ve seen hot yoga but never hot treadmill running. Maybe you’ve invented a new sport. We’ll be millionaires Rodney 🤣🤣🤣

Well Done for breaking the fear! It’s amazing how associating something to an incident can alter your perception of it!

Even though I got back into running last year following my injury last January the fear of falling during the darker evenings stopped me running! So I have literally started again from scratch! A lot of people asked why! I wanted to build my confidence again and strengthen my running! I am enjoying being back

Thank you! One of the loveliest things about this site is it’s full of people who just get it when you talk about the challenges and highs and lows of running. Really glad you’re back and it’s going well for you. Long may that continue! The longer days over the summer with more daylight is a real bonus-I really hope that confidence comes back for you. ❤️

Well done, and a well deserved “Global Running Day on a Treadmill badge”! 😉

I’m still saving up for mine (treadmill), but the day will come.

From my lovely jeffing this morning, I annoyingly didn’t get a Runkeeper Global Running Day badge, nor a Strava one. Probably because both thought I was walking…. Which I was, but also doing a bit of jeffingly running, surely that should have rewarded me with badge, right?

Anyway! Well run!

I thought you might approve of the use of the treadmill! I know you’re a fan. I hope you can find a suitable one soon!

Sad times with the Runkeeper/Strava apps being judgyabout running verses walking. They needs a good talking to…all runs are valid runs-your run your way and all that! I will award you a 🏅 for Global Running Day!

I’m so glad there are more of us who enjoy treadmill running MU! I feel quite defensive when I hear people dissing them. Of course it’s nicer running outside, but my idea of nice isn’t in high winds, freezing rain or scorching sunshine! I doubt I’d have run at all this winter for example, nor last summer, if I hadn’t had my gym membership.

They’re fantastic for speed runs and hill workouts too. 🥵

I didn’t get to run today though, so didn’t earn the badge. Never mind, it’s not like I missed out on real bling; that would have been tragic! 😂

Sometimes I think treadmills get a bad rap! It’s nice to spot a fellow happy treadmill runner! It’s so difficult to be outdoors when it’s really hot and you burn as easily as I do. All runs are celebrated here!!

Have you got any bling opportunities coming up? I’m going to do a local race at the end of June but that only gives you a beer and a banger at the end…not that I’m complaining!!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to MissUnderstanding

We did have a runner.. I need to look back, she was somewhere very hot and there was no alternative if she was to run... she was a huge advocate for it!

I don’t have any actual bling in my near future, but there’s a boatload to be had from August onwards into next spring. My bling hangers (yes, 2 now!) get a reprieve in the summer months. Building their strength for the onslaught! 😂

Ooooo, bangers and a beer - there’s one of those races round here too. Enjoy, you’ll definitely earn those delights! 😋

Me too...my treadmill was a real support after injury and in bad weather... I'm thinking of getting another now after reading this report:) Second hand this time though!

MR OF can use it too! :)

Well done on your treadmill run . I used to own a treadmill but sold it and now I wish I hadn’t . It would be very handy for me on the days that I don’t feel like running outside. I think I might have to reinvest in one Anyway I didn’t realise it was global running day today. There’s always a day for something or other 😂😂xx

MissUnderstanding profile image
MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Folkylass

There are so many random days!!! I have to admit, global running day didn’t have much of an impact on me except for the badge…which I only knew about after I earned it!!

Good luck with treadmill shopping if you go down that route! I’m quite lucky that I’m often at the gym so can use their enormous ones-I think I’d need a new house to fit one in and that’s a probably a bit OTT!!! 🤣

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to MissUnderstanding

Likewise MU! Much as I’d love my own treadmill at home. Mr Cheeky and I belong to a pricey gym and, like you, I’m a bit spoilt with their huge machines. We live in an old cottage: the rooms aren’t conducive to such monsters!

Folkylass , have fun shopping for one if you go down that route again! 😀
