Work and running?

Don't know how u manage to get work and running to fit into your lives but I admire you. I haven't worked for a year but tomorrow, back I go to full time work. Any tips? I will be doing a variety of shifts so it might be a challenge but I reckon I can do this! Working close to the fields and woods, so could run after work!

Ha ha like the piccie. Just give yourself a chance to settle in, it's been a long while since you worked full time so don't be too hard on yourself exercise wise. Cut yourself a bit of slack until you've got fully back into the work mode.

Good Luck Joolie in your new job , I hope it goes really well for you .

I always run evenings during the week after work . I did toy with the ideas of running before work , but it sent my faffidge mode into overload :-)

I do love my long runs on Sunday morning though :-) xxx

I'd advise you to plan your week. Perhaps just do one mid-week run and one at the weekend (or whenever your off days are) to start with while you get back into the routine of work. If you work shifts, it might be tricky working out when to run at a time that fits in with when you need to eat and sleep, but if you write it down then you will be more likely to stick to it.

Congrats on the job Joolie. Hopefully different shifts might give you better chances of getting out for a run although you might need to play around with what time you run.

I can only fit runs in when I work locally or from home or away on a work trip, otherwise I struggle to get out. In general I try to get out first thing before the day starts. But if I'm in my "normal" office I've got no chance of fitting anything in run wise

Good luck!

Ive worked full time for ages now and my kids are 14 and 11. It is hard to fit everything in but my as ive is:

Don't be a martyr

If you can afford it get a cleaner

Delegate stuff to others in your house

Be creative- fit in runs when you can

Embrace the early morning. It's the best time to run and will energise you all day

Good luck!! X

Love this reply..lots I can empathise with from when I worked..sooooo long ago. I was not running then, but doing a long walk/ run combination, ( very slow and not following any programme), every morning before work usually at about 6 a.m .

I got a cleaner too, felt guilty about it, but did it. Delegated jobs, as you say. Hardest bit for me was to stop trying to do everything myself!!

Organisation was, for me the key.. I really admire all of you though, because my children were older, so maybe a tad easier for me:)

And, as you know... I love the early mornings!!!! )

For me I'm afraid it involves getting up a lot earlier than I want to and restricts my running time. I can't manage more than a 90 min run in the week, Sat is my only realistic option to work at longer runs. I don't manage after work since I have other commitments most evenings. Are evenings an option for you? At least now it is light longer.

My shifts will involve sleep ins, days, evenings and weekends - not sure yet but there might be some runs appearing at different times. I am a before breakfast runner given the choice but it will bring variety into it. The village where I will be working has some wonderful fields and woods for me to use too so could even run straight from work and then drive home 😉

Yeay.. working, running girl! Go you.

I agree with all the comments you have received.. Huge good luck as you head back to work!:)

Just. as the others have said, organisation and planning. Like every thing else really, the better prepared you are, it just has to be simpler!

Early morning runs where possible? If the after work runs do work, then do them, but vary them when you can. I feel there may be times, maybe after work when you don't feel like them and rather than risk them becoming a chore? It will be your choice.. sort of dipping your toe into the water.

This is a new adventure, a new running chapter.. and probably the running will make the transition easier:)

Cannot wait to see your posts x Exciting:)

Planning is going to be the key until you get into a routine. You'll just have to find out what works for you, whether it's after work, lunch time or early morning. Personally if I don't run before work I know I won't get out. After work I'm hungry, then my stomach is too full, then it's late and I can't get off the couch etc., etc. Early morning it's cooler and I'm set up for the day. I would have problems running at lunchtime aswell - don't want my colleagues seeing me red-faced and dripping. But everyone is different.

Lots of juggling required until you find a pattern that works for you. For me, I decide when I want to run, then arrange all else around this. If I run out of time or energy, the cleaning, ironing etc will still be there another time, if the family need anything that hasn't been done - they can help!

Will your shifts follow a regular pattern or every week is going to be different?

In the second case it can be a bit complicate to arrange your running schedule and it is more of a test of will... but, hey, by running you've already demonstrated that will power is not an issue. ;)

Best of luck with your job!

Once the workplace opens properly, there will be a regular pattern of shifts but at first it's a bit hit and miss, so additional determination and destruction of all excuses required!!

I'm sure you can do it; you've done more difficult stuff, haven't you? ;)

You're unstoppable, girl!
