Mirena coil and side effects

I've had the mirena coil fitted for just over a month and I've been suffering a bit with it. I have been experiencing quite severe cramping pretty much since I had it fitted and I have been taking naproxen and codine, as these are the only painkillers that work for me. I have also been spotting since a week after I had it fitted. During the past week I have also noticed that it has drastically altered my mood. I have become very irritable and my mood changes a lot, which is something my partner has also noticed. It also seems to have decreased my sex drive.

Before this, I tried the copper coil, and this worked out fine for about 6 months. However, it started to cause me really bad pain and the bleeding was getting too heavy for me, so I decided to have it removed. Before that I was on several different pills over the course of two years and all of these seemed to impact my mood and sex drive.

Would anyone be able to tell me if the effects the mirena coil is having on me will settle down at all or is this what it is going to be like? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am struggling quite a lot and I don't really know where to turn with birth control if this doesn't work out for me.

Thank you :)

Yellowstar were you screened for stis like chalmydia during your coil insertion ? Any coil insertion has a risk of causing PID even with no stis present. You should go back to the coil fitter and discuss your symptoms. It is possible for the coil to be displaced and if it is in the cervical canal it can produce marked tummy cramping .

Yeah I was screened for stis before I had the coil inserted so I haven’t got anything like that. Last week I also went to have it checked to make sure it’s in the correct position and it is, so I’m at a bit of a loss as to what could be causing the pain

The coil can be in the correct position and you could still have PID. Did the nurse or doctor check you for PID when you went back ?
