Mirena coil and bleeding, cramps, back ache

Hi

I had the mirena coil fitted around a year ago. No bleeding and just had bad cramps in my right side of my side for a week. A slight bit of bleeding for a few days too then nothing. The last week i have had severe back ache, cramps in my right side by my hip and bleeding. I passed a clot the other day at work and it felt like someone was trying to rip out my insides. I have checked for my strings but can't seem to feel them 😕 I am the type of person who doesn't really like to darken the Dr's door unless I'm really ill, even then I try to avoid the Dr's at all costs. Is this something I should worry about though? Or is this totally normal? I keep getting mixed reviews from good old Dr Google.......

Thank you for responses in advance

All coils have a small failure rate. The immediate thing to do is to do a pregnancy test and rule out ectopic pregnancy ( this is a medical emergency ) If this comes back ok - have you had a new sexual contact in the last 1 year and if so, have you done sti testing ? Even with a new partner , IUDs and IUSs have a small association with PID, so with new onset pain consider assessment for PID. Flank pain consider UTI /pyelonephritis.

in case of most of the above , you really need a medical assessment. I would suggest attendance at a sexual health clinic at the earliest opportunity, even A and E if you feel significantly unwell.

Hi sorry I didn't reply sooner! Only just been notified of the reply. Thank you for replying. I haven't done a test but have been to see a Dr. They have told me I'm "worrying over nothing" and sent me on my way. I'm planning to get a test as soon as funds allow and have booked in to the local sexual health clinic where I had it fitted so they can check. Problem is its 3 weeks away as they are so over booked. I have been with the same guy for almost 8 years now so an sti doesn't really worry me.

Thank you for replying . I think the pregnancy test is a priority, I have been told you can even get them in Poundstretchers etc for very little money. I would encourage you to do this as soon as possible , I am surprised the GP didnt do or arrange for one ...

Tbh I was too. I asked and they said "what's the point your on the coil it's a waste of resources" I live in a very small village so don't have many shops near by. I'm paid tomorrow so will be ordering one on amazon for next day delivery. I wish I never went onto the coil as I have never had these issues when I was on the implant, that just caused other issues that now seem so minor to this.

I am sorry you had that reply. If there is a medical reason, then doing a test is not a "waste of resources " . A woman presenting with abdominal pain who is sexually active should always have a pregnancy test done, even if she has an IUD/IUS in place. If you had attended A and E , they would have done one. I hope it all works out ok with the test.

It is true that the most likely situation is that the coils threads have simply moved up in the cervical canal - but this needs to be verified. Until then, you should use condoms with your partner , and the pregnancy test as above.

I'm currently use the saying no method as I know that when I'm not on contraception I can be rather fertile and easily get pregnant. He completely understands and is very supportive of me and my current issue
