Can anyone suggest good exercises for cerebellum ataxia - for balance particularly?

This is the same condition that I have.

I visit the gym 3 times a week and I find the best exercises for balance are ones that strengthen your core . I do 3 minutes in the plank position and balance on one leg on a balance ball for one minute per leg. Hope this helps.

You should ask for Physio, I get it and it has helped a lot. I can't either afford or get to a gym. But the two main things we started with is to try and balance with both feet together and hold it for a count of ten, without holding on to anything, then try one foot in front of the other again not holding on to anything for a count of ten, swap and do the same. It sounds so easy! obviously make sure there is something you can fall into. I do this three times a day, another is something I now call bum ups! Do it on the bed or if you can get the floor then the floor, I find that hard. Raise both knees up flat to your bum with both feet flat on the floor and then raise your back with your hands flat on the floor or bed pull your bum in and count to three, do this nine times three times a day. Will hurt to start but does help balance and also give you a great bum. It is a bit like a reverse sit up. If you don't have a stick yet then ask your GP for one. That is a whole new learning curve.

I meant it about the bum by the way mine has never been firmer

Thanks Denise. I was doing some small stomach crunches to help strengthen my core, but your exercise sounds more effective. I am going to try it!! And nothing wrong with a firm bum!

I have had neuro - physio and it does help. I would certainly asked your G.P. about that. My own personal regime , not for everyone, is that I do a lot of lower leg muscle work and core strengthening exercises. Let us know how you get on . Best wishes.

Tai Chi is very good for balance . I also go to 2 exercise classes a week- one for wheelchair users one for people over 50. good luck Sylvia

I have been to Tai Chi classes in the past (seated) but it

had little/no effect on balance. It is my legs and balance that need help!k

It looks like exercise seems to help most people on here, but I do not find that at all. If I do any exercise it makes me ten times worse with my tremors, then I feel even more exhausted, it wears my body out. Not really sure why. So I can do very little.

Hi. I was given some exercises to do when I went to neurophysio. Lie on bed or floor & with legs bent just move 1 leg making a circle slowly, keeping other leg still.

Keeping core strength will help balance. Try squats keeping hold so your safe. Hamstring stretches are good too whilst sat.

Look on you tube for exercises too 🤗 . Remember always listen to your body. Don't do too much & always stay safe.
