Need suggestions please

I was diagnosed back in 2014 by Prof H at Sheffield. I have the SCA6 version of Ataxia. It has had a steady influence on my ability to walk, and has now reached the stage where I am frightened to go out, for fear of a severe fall or something. I now am looking at using a mobility scooter so I can at least get out of the house for a coffee. I am very lucky, in that I have a very understanding partner, but she has in the past 12 months had her own serious health issues (Breast Cancer and a heart condition called AF).

What would be a decent scooter for just getting out and about? I do NOT want a large affair, as it would not fit in the car we have, plus I have to do any lifting.

Thank you

HiThere are a lot of scooters advertised that are easy folding but are not particularly stable due to their small wheels. Although people may recommend what works for them, it might not work for you.

The best thing to do is to make an appointment at a disabled living centre or disability shop that has an occupational therapist there. They will be able to assess the best option for you based on your vehicle, where you want to use it and your ability and safety in dismantling it for transport. They will also show you possible hacks for getting equipment in and out of your car using slide sheets etc.

Go prepared with all the information as described above. It may be that a folding powered chair is more suitable than a scooter - they have come a long way in compact design in the last few years. Also, be clear about your budget from the outset so they know which range to trial with you.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

I'm now in the same position - mobility scooter or wheelchair? We have quite a number of mobility shops where I live so will go and see which I prefer, plus I wouldn't be able to lift either option so will look at fitting of chair hoist. Good luck to both of us

I have SCA6, diagnosed 10 years ago. It is progressive so mobility aid needs change over time. I use a powerchair indoors and keep both a rollator and wheelchair in the car. When I stop driving I too will look at mobility scooters for out and about. I will visit a shop (like careco: careco.co.uk). A huge range available to see and try out, whatever your stage of mobility. My last 2 visits saw me buy a wheelchair from them though, after finding the sort of rollator I needed, I purchased that elsewhere. I am hoping that when I need a scooter that one will come with a rear mount for a rollator, so I can dismount and enter coffee shops etc that are too small for a scooter.

have a look at mobility shops that do 2nd hand. Discuss your needs with them. By phone first if easier.

It’s important to get out and keep bothering the public! I have an electric wheelchair and visit the gym and Costa about 3 times q week. They know what I drink, which is just as well, my voice is going too!
