I have just renewed my house and contents insurance and the company added my scooter to the policy

for £12 Previously the cost of insuring my scooter was £56 through an independent insurance policy

Talking about scooters has anyone got a scooter which will go over rougher ground as mine is only suitable

for pavements

Warning. I talked to my insurance company about this and they also said they covered scooters. BUT, the cover is only damage and theft.

By all means take the cover from your home insurer, but make sure it is a proper Mobility Scooter policy and not just an extension to Home Contents.

It may not cover things like Third Party liability which is very important. Anyone who has used a Mobility Scooter will know they become invisible to other pedestrians. Every time I use a scooter in my local shopping centre I have people nearly walk into me - even if I am travelling so slowly it is almost a crawl. They just don't see us. I had one woman drag her young child behind me as I was reversing even though the warning hooter was going.

You must be covered for this, not sure if required by law, but certainly for your own peace of mind - and financial security if an accident with another person should happen.

Wyndham makes a very good point. All scooter users should take note.

I did say to check with your insurance wydham must have the exception because I have a letter from the saga saying as long as it is declared on the policy liability is covered so check and if they don't cover you switch at renewel time

wobelyjohn - You are quite right about checking the policy, I had just wanted to highlight what I thought was one important thing because I had initially forgotten about it.

I went back to my Home Contents insurers (Age UK) and it turns out my existing policy does in fact cover liability so that is no longer a worry. Thanks for mentioning this.

Unfortunately though, my Home Contents policy doesn't cover other things like getting me back home after a theft (etc), or covering the cost of a replacement scooter, and so on. I can't reasonably expect a Home Contents policy to cover these sorts of things.

The insurers may decide in the future to extend their cover to include Mobility Scooters, but in the meantime I need to sit down and decide how import these other things are against the cost of having a specialist Mobility Scooter Insurance policy. With my Age UK Home Contents policy it would only have cost me an extra £1 per month...

1 point I forgot always ask your insurance about cover and ask them to send you a letter saying you are covered. A trick you can use if you don’t want to ask direct is to write to them and don’t include your phone no or email that way they will probably not bother to look up your phone no and reply by letter. But always get things in writing. The cover is often hidden in the small print in pedal cycle section but get it in writing.

I have used Fish for years as I was supplied an electric wheelchair by the NH and was told I had to insure it myself- covers breakdowns as I was worried about if I was stranded
