How come my concentration "freezes" when my system responds to noise unconsciously?

Sound Anxiety
I can well understand that if you have over-sensitised nerves the last thing you need is to work in a very noisy environment. The easy answer is to suggest you find another job free from loud noise. But I know good jobs can be hard to find. Never-the-less I think that should be your long term plan.In the meantime can't you speak to your manager and see if they could relocate you to a job that has quieter noise levels?
Or the suggestion already made is worth considering: get a pair of ear plugs of Amazon or Ebay, ones that still allow two-way communication with other work colleagues but will dampen the background noise.
If you could desensitise your nervous system maybe the noise levels would become tolerable. The book 'Hope and help with your nerves' by Doctor Claire Weekes contains a method that with time brings desensitisation: many people have found it very effective in calming their nerves and I recommend it. You can pick up a new or pre-owned copy on Amazon or Ebay for just a few dollars, it's easy to read and understand and doesn't use technical terms.
Whatever you decide, I do hope that you soon find respite from this problem of noise affecting your nerves.
