Mirtazipine dose for less sedation next day?

Hi everyone

Hope you doing well as possible.

I had a episode of not being able to sleep for a few days and it gave me anxiety because of that .

My doc subscribed me sertaline as he said if I tackle my anxiety my sleep will sort itself out .

Well I had the worse experience ever only after 3 doses ...

Sent my anxiety from 3 to 1000!! I had a realy bad reaction to it .

Whent back to my GP and he subscribed me mirtazipine

I've been taking it for 6 weeks

4 weeks on 15 mg went back to say I was feeling groggy and he suggested to up to 30mg as it's less sedating according to him and now I've been on 2 weeks taking 30mg.

Although I had a few days not too bad, most are not great at all as feel very sedated next day and with a brain fog and feeling slight spaced out and overall low mood. I've never been depressed but been low lately because of all I just explained.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this medication and what's the best dose for sleep with less sedating effects next day.

Although anxiety has eased a tiny bit, I still feel anxious because of the sedating feeling next day with brain fog and overall tired feeling .

Even had comments at work that I look tired!

Does this side effect ever goes away or the fog still persists further into treatment?

I'm contemplating of trying to reduce down and take 7.5mg for a week and feel if it works better.

I won't change anything prior to discussing with my GP as I don't want any nasty surprises!

Any advice or comments will be much appreciated.

God bless

Honestly I had to come off the stuff. It was a pity because I do think it worked, but it made me so tired I was dozing at my desk at work, even just taking 7.5mg. Switched to trazodone 50mg. Much less drowsiness as long as I take it at least 7 hours before wake up time.

Hi, thanks for your comment.

May I ask how long you were on mirtazipine and how long did it took to work.

I take it for anxiety and sleep issues on the back of that .

Also does trazadone helps with sleep like has it got the same effect with helping to fall asleep?

Many thanks

It’s been a bit since I took it but I think I was on it for a couple of months. Basically until I figured out that that’s what was making me so sleepy during the day. Trazodone works similarly for me with helping me fall asleep but doesn’t make me drowsy the next day as long as a take out at least 7/8 hours before wake up time.

Changing meds went just fine for me. I was less tired almost immediately upon switching.

Hi there, thanks again for your reply,

May I ask which dosage were you on mirtazipine and why you were subscribed in the first place .

As sleep and anxiety was my trigger to be subscribed in the first place

Thanks in advance for your reply

I was prescribed 15 mg in the evening because I was doing well throughout the day but feeling anxious in the evenings/at bedtime.

I take 45mg daily. Sleep well, with about an hour of feeling slightly groggy the following morning, then fine for the rest of the day.

The general rule seems to be the higher the dose, the more therapeutic and less sedating Mirtazapine is.
