i’m scared to sleep

amyty19 profile image

i’m sorry that i write so much on here , i’m a constant worrier ahah.

But when it starts to get late i get worried for some reason , like a sensation just goes over me and i’m terrified to go to my bed.

At first i started sleeping on my sofa , but now it’s turned to me sleeping on a air mattress in my parents room.

I don’t know what to do, does anyone have any advice??

Hey there. I definitely know that feeling all too well. It is definitely a scary feeling. I too have had my fears of going to sleep. Afraid to sleep. And that's probably what sparked Insomnia. I'd be awaken with panic attacks constantly. So if you are indeed dealing with anxiety like I am, its definitely all anxiety. It kept me scared to sleep when I was first going through this.

I'd get this adrenaline feeling or like sensation coming over my body at night when I was trying to sleep and all I can think of when it happens is, "oh gosh, is this it for me? What's about to happen to me?"

You are not alone. You have to know it's a process and try to figure out a way to relax yourself by night. It doesn't mean it will stop the sensation from happening but once you begin to see how anxiety happens you can deal with it better. Find a distraction when it happens even if you have to grab your phone and watch a video or play a game. I'm a worrier too. 😊 wish you the best.

I get what you are saying. Cuz yes, I've noticed that being more on the internet and social media has made my anxiety worse from seeing all sorts of negativity. But I'm was suggesting only in a time of a panic attacks which comes on anytime it wants to, and as a quick distraction to watch something or play a game. I can say that doing that has helped me during plenty of my panic attacks. Ofcourse, watch something fun or funny or that draws your attention well. But you are right as well. I'm just suggesting in a different way.

i’m watching funny videos right now to try and distract me from symptoms i’m having, dizziness and head pressure 😴

Icanbeathis2016 profile image
Icanbeathis2016 in reply to amyty19

I do that alot. I'm not saying it will work every time or to expect a complete turn around of your symptoms as soon as you watch something or do something to distract you but, it can atleast momentarily take your mind off of being so afraid. Which is what will keep the panic and anxiety going. 😊

yes i get what you mean and yes sometimes it doesn’t work as much as i would hope but it still takes the edge off of it 😊👍🏼

Firstly, don't apologise for writing posts! That's what this forum is for.

I know you've mentioned going to the doctors many times - but has any doctor done any tests? For example have you had any Antibodies tested? Had any blood tests to check your Thyroid out? Have you had blood tests to check your levels of Vitamin D? Or B12?

Are you on any medication now that could be causing some side effects?

Not sure how to advise you - have you tried breathing exercises when these feelings come on?

okay thankyou i just feel like i’m asking too much ahaha , but yes i’ve been a few times in question to this problem i’m having with my symptoms i’m having right now and she suggested blood tests , i had them and it came back saying i had low iron, i got put on medication for 3 months , but i went back because dizziness was still apparent, i got put on dizzy tablets but they don’t seem to be helping so i stopped taking them.

I do want to go back to try explain anything that i’ve missed.

Mary-intussuception in reply to amyty19

Are you eating well?

When the dizziness comes on you could try drinking water. One or two cups as you rest till the dizziness passes.

But definitely go back to the doctor about all you are experiencing now. Ask about having some Thyroid blood tests ask for Thyroid Antibodies TPO and TgAb tests. Ask for some more nutrients tests as well as iron - ask for Vitamin D, B12, amd Folate to be tested too.

There could be some underlying Physical cause. For example - Anxiety, Fearfulness, depression, slow metabolism, Digestive problems are all symptoms of an Underactive Thyroid and there are many more .

Hope you feel better soon.

God Bless x

EDITED :

ps

Iron & Ferritin should be retested - I don't think you should be left on iron pills indefinitely without being retested.

thankyou for that, i’ll definitely ask when i can go back x

Not always vit b 12 is the problem

Anxiety is deeper inside

Vit b12 I taken it a long time

And no not helpful because sometimes you do more harm with suplements

Mary-intussuception profile image
Mary-intussuception in reply to Elfje

You should never take any supplements unless you have been tested and found to have a deficiency. I advised to ask for blood tests - I would never advise taking supplements unless prescribed following a diagnosis after a blood test revealed a deficiency.

Never take multivitamins. Never take multiminerals.

People who should be tested for deficiencies include - those on a PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor ) used to reduce stomach acid; people with IBD (Crohn's Disease or Colitis ) people with Diverticular disease; people with Underactive Thyroid.

People who are healthy and eat a full, well balanced diet & get out doors enough in daylight may be able to get adequate nutrition from their diet & the sun. But some conditions cause absorption problems - that's why I advise to try and get blood tests.

The only other advice I gave to the poster was to drink water, while resting after the dizziness comes on. And to see the doctor.

Sorry for any misunderstanding.

God Bless x ( from Wales)

Hi at least your parents seem understanding and don't seem to mind you sleeping in their room even though it must cramp their style.

I was trying to imagine ever being able to do that with my parents as it would have been a big no no and I would have got yelled at. x

I know how you feel, I get anxious knowing the night time is coming. I end up staying awake all night sometimes. Are you in counseling? You could also try seeing a sleep specialist? I've tried everything I read, going to sleep the same time, tea etc.

That's great, don't hesitate to change doctors if you feel their Not helping you. I changed several times, the same with Medication if you're prescribed any.

Would having a parent sleeping in your room with you help? Start every night for a week, then 6 for a week etc and gradually phase it so that you can sleep on your own.

Perhaps at the end of it, you could leave a light on and your door open so they can keep an ear out for you and poke their head in and check on you.

Idk, that’s what I had to do and it helped me.

I have started listening to audiobooks through earbuds and a blutooth. Its like having someone read you a story.

My mind can't race about worries.

Pay close attention where you start because you will fall asleep and wake chapters later. Audible has a sleep timer.

I can't fall off without it some nights.

thankyouu, i’ll definitely give it a try 👍🏼

Hi, I know what your going through. I would sometimes fall asleep and jump up startled...then I became afraid to fall asleep. A few suggestions, make sure you stay away from any sugar for a while. No sodas or caffeine..these things are not good for people with panic and anxiety and once I stopped and started eating healthier, doing meditations I got ALOT better...try drinking 2 cups of chamomile tea before bed and reading or do a sleep meditation on your phone to help you sleep. Also very important, this book is amazing and they also have a facebook group that also gives advice. Get the book DARE by Barry McDonald. It's amazing and helps so many people get better. I used his method and didnt need to go on any medication. Hope this helps!

Night time anxiety is quite common for several reasons. 1. It’s dark outside and darkness brings uncertainties. There’s a reason why scary movies are often set at night or in dark spaces. 2. You are alone with your thoughts. There are no daytime distractions to keep your mind from racing and most people are asleep if there are others in the house. 3. You feel trapped in the moment. If there is a pressing matter at work or in a relationship, there isn’t really much that can be done in the middle of the night, you have to wait. 4. Your afraid you won’t be able to sleep and that you’ll be tired the next day. 5. Your afraid you’ll have bad dreams.

These are Some of the non medical reasons why people have anxiety at night. Understanding and accepting these helps give your mind a logical reason other than there is “something wrong with me.”

Here’s a good article about it. betterhelp.com/advice/sleep...

It’s great your going to the doctor and therapy to get everything checked out. In the meantime, here’s a trick someone on one of the forums, maybe this one, gave and I’ve been using it whenever I wake up with insomnia. Go through the alphabet and for each letter say a name of an animal to yourself (ie. “A-anteater, B- buffalo, C-cat...) of course you can use anything with the Alphabet, but this works well. It helps focus your mind on a task. Many times I’m asleep before I get half done.
