Choked up feeling

Hey! Does anyone else get that choked up feeling? Like something is clogging your throat? I’ll have a nervous breakdown over it and get lightheaded and I will end up having a panic attack.

Hi BJayy7, that is a common sensation to most anxious people. After all, the average person may even feel it but it doesn't throw them into panic. Have you ever been to

a beautiful wedding and you are moved by the moment? The average person would

say "I get all choked up" when I see how happy the couple is. It's a part of our body

that holds our emotions. Whether happy or sad or fearful, our throat usually displays

the first signs as well as the butterflies in the upper stomach.

With health anxiety, we interpret that feeling as dangerous, there must be something

wrong and then we start breathing shallow or even holding our breath in fear and the

lightheaded feelings come on increasing more anxiety until we feel like we may have

a panic attack.

Hopefully knowing and understanding how our mind accelerates one negative thought

into many may have you learn how to accept this feeling as not harmful. The key is to

not allow that fear to grow. A great book for you to read is by Dr. Claire Weekes "Hope

and Help for your Nerves" it will explain it further detail how to overcome these lies

sent out by our anxious mind.

Since I am not a doctor and can only go by my own experiences, it is always best to

see your doctor if this persists. Wishing you peace & calm. :) xx

Health anxiety can sure zap you can't it?

in reply to

Yes it can!!!!

Yes, it’s very Common. I used to have it a lot. At some point, every time I closed my eyes, I would get an image of a figure dressed in a black hood which would be strangling me (sorry, I hope I am not giving you the nightmares). Anyway, it was horrible. It went away eventually and now I get this choked feeling but very rarely. And I am very successful in ignoring it as I am 100% sure it will not hurt me. When it happens I take a deep breath and swallow very slowly which reminds me that it’s all mental and nothing more.
