Why does depression make us so tired?

I’m just sat here wondering why depression exhausts you so much. I never want to do anything, I know I’d feel much better if I went to the gym but I just can’t do it. I could happily stay in bed all day doing nothing but watch TV. Is this just a habit that we can break?!
