DID I CATCH SOMETHING

My dog & I came into contact with a coyote. The coyote was scared, no aggression but my dog took off after it. She had a muzzle on so couldnt bite it. But when she came back she had blood on her face. That blood touched the side of my thumb. I washed thoroughly with hot water & soap. But because I’m a hypochondriac, im worried it was the coyotes blood and that imma catch some type of disease or rabies. I wasn’t bitten

Go to the emergency room and ask them about rabies. I am in the US. I have had 2 similar contacts with animals that were possibly rabid. One was a raccoon and the other was a bat. In both cases the doctor told me to have rabies shots. They are not painful.

Did you only get 1 shot? Or you had to come back after a certain amount of times for other doses?

If your dog had a muzzle she would not have been able to bite. Could it have been her blood? To me it seems as if the coyote were rabid she would have attacked. I don’t know for sure. What about your dog? Is she okay? I would call animal control and let them know what happened. Does your dog have to be muzzled? Mine has at the Vet. I just worry about her being able to protect herself. Apparently it doesn’t stop her. She or he must be very tough! It could just be a scratch from bushes. I’m surprised your dog caught her. On tv I see them run into bushes. I’m picturing Wiley Coyote I think. If it got on your thumb and you have no open sores you should be fine but you could start by calling animal control. I don’t know where you are from but in Virginia in the US if you come in contact with wildlife like a bear or something it is recommended that you call animal control or wildlife conservation asap. If nothing else at least call your primary doctor. They may be able to advise you. I understand not wanting to go to the doctors. I hate it. Hope you find some peace.

Thank you so much. The reason why i dont think it’s her blood was bc she licked it off her face and there was no more blood present unless I missed something. I live in a large cul de sac so we don’t get traffic or wild animals. So i thought it was a good idea to start with some off leash training outside the yard and park. And what are the odds of this happening lol. We called animal control and they tell us that they can’t do anything about wildlife because they’re free to roam. Which I dont understand cause it’s not common where we live and it seems like this coyote lives in the bushes on our street so idk what to do about that. It’s bit frustrating bc my family & i have small children & small dogs. I’m from southern california

Wow I’m sure that’s frustrating. Your dog can also catch it too. Did you ask them about rabies? Is there an spca or animal control you can call? Bears come around in VA and we always have to report them. There should be a way to keep your neighborhood safe.

It’s very frustrating. They just said no matter what’s the case, they can’t remove wildlife but we can learn how to live in harmony with the wildlife lol when I get rabies, im not gonna be living in harmony

Or when it attacks you or your children. Although it seems scared of you like you are of it. I’m terrified of snakes. Phobic. Then I walked up on one at the river. As soon as it saw me it took off and fast! It helped me with my fear some. Not 100% but some. Maybe that can give you some relief

Exactly! And that actually does, thank you. And I should be fine, i asked a doctor and other people and they say I need to be bitten to get rabies. The one I should worry about is my dog, so still keeping an eye on her. She seems fine. But it sucks, I can’t even take my dogs for a walk, so I guess i’ll play fetch in my backyard with them

They will love playing fetch! I don’t have a fenced yard so my dogs can only go out on a leash. I can’t walk very long. I was researching and it said the best thing you can do for your dog or give them is your time! Playing fetch will make them so happy! It seems like the coyote is more scared of your dog than your dog is of him. I would probably just not use the muzzle and take a hard walking stick just in case. They say rabid animals will attack so possibly it’s a good sign. My crazy mom in law use to lay on the ground in her yard and try to feed wild raccoons and feed and water field mice in her house! I truly hope everything works out for you. We have a 14 year old dog and my son has a 4 month old puppy. I have had dogs my whole life. Now my anxiety has gotten so bad that when my son brought this puppy home I have been researching puppy info non stop and paranoid something will happen to it. Crazy! Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!
