I take Xanax too , but a bit more than that , I started with .25 now I take 1.0 but after years. Maybe take some gentle yoga , as an added relaxer . Walks, healthy eating, cut out caffeine and refined sugars . It helps , keep in touch

Do you get any withdrawals when you don't take them?

I take a quick attacking xanax as well as a slow release and Effexor. The meds are a blessing when dealing with both the regular stressors of life as well as dealing with a disorder. I never wanted to be on meds and always thought I could kick it on my own, which only led me to more stress and depression. I now see the Meds as a crutch to help stabilize my stressors as I learn new and healthier coping skills. But being on the meds has made me a far better father, husband, and employee for the time being. Before I was coming home from work and going straight to bed as well as sleeping all weekend. And my waking hours were shear nightmares full of panic attacks a floods of intrusive thoughts that left me nearly debilitated. I know it as scary to add any chemicals to your body but realize if you decide to take anything it can be just a short term goal to help you get back on your feet.

Hey I have bad health anxiety as well I went to the er Count less times did every test imaginable for Lyme disease , heart disease, hiv all test came back normal had my blood drawn more than I can count .. anyways I went to my pcp and she prescribed me a ssri zoloft ... I take it once daily and have been for about it a month ... this drug is a miracle ... my anxiety has literally disappeared I still have it in the back of my head but it’s virtually gone I feel like I’m 80-90 percent back to myself ... zoloft isn’t addicting like Xanax it’s not habit forming I recommend speaking to your pcp about taking ssri it def works

I can't take ssri I hate the side affects and withdrawals of xanax I know I will kill over with those once I stop...

I got ya ... the side effects were horrible for me the first week of taking ssri .. I had increased anxiety / depression but once I got over the initial side effects they began to disappear .. I took Xanax while starting the ssri and it helped tremendously. But I totally understand ssri works different for all of us but if you can manage the symptoms at first It works in the long run !

I know I can but my mind won't allow me the anxitey won't either. How long do you plan to stay on meds and how long have you been taking xanax?

I’m going to speak with my pcp next weekend and see what she suggest but the meds just started kicking in for me . As for the Xanax I have been taking it as needed for 2 months now when I get really bad anxiety/panic attacks . I totally understand how you feel ... when I first got my prescription for both Xanax and the ssri .. they literally stayed on my counter for about a month.. i just couldn’t come to terms that anxiety was causing all these issues for me.. I’ve had little anxiety when I was younger and got over them fast so I just couldn’t believe what I was experiencing as all caused by anxiety .. so I kept going to the dr , er thinking I had this and that and eventually I came to the point I got tired of feeling the way I felt took my first zoloft pill .. I’m not gonna lie to you .. the way it made me feel at first .. I wanted to just quit the medication and thought what did I just get myself into lol but I’m on the lowest dosage and took a Xanax to calm me down each time ... eventually the side effects subsided

One thing I forgot to mention ... my mom has epilepsy and she has to take medication to control her seizures and has been for the past 5 years... so I was scared I was going to have epilepsy too.. my grandma had a stroke a few years ago as well so I kept thinking negative thoughts of what if it happens to me .. but I’ve never had a seizure and all my test turn out normal .. so if that’s anything try to take the results that the test came back normal and that nothing is wrong if you keep telling yourself that eventually your mind will begin to accept reality and not the what if’s because you made it this far without any seizures .. so what’s different about yesterday or the day before? and if you never had it the day before you’ll most likely not have it today or tomorrow .. it’s just anxiety playing games with her mind

Ativan is more helpful for me. It is possible to deal with this without meds and there are alternatives to SSRIs. Happy to talk anytime. It will be ok.

Can you share what alternatives you have found to be helpful? I've recently received a prescription for Zoloft but when I think of the side effects and withdrawals coming off, it makes my anxiety worse. Then the catastrophic thinking begins, and the ruminating thoughts start, and before you know it panic begins to set in.

I've tried calming teas, magnesium, ashwagandha, fish oil, passionflower, B6, theanine. If they work it's so minimal that it's not really measurable.

Yes, I've been through all of those. Have you tried Kava Kava root? It's been used in the Papua New Guinea for thousands of years as an intoxicant and there was a scare about liver damage but like most of those things, it's over blown. You may find a single capsule very effective. I'm 6' 3' and so I've taken up to 5 a day with no change in liver function.

You may also try SAM-e, which is a frontline treatment in Europe for anxiety. It's a compound produced naturally in your body.

Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely look into those. Time to get my research hat out tomorrow. I agree with the kava lover scare. From what I read there's no truth to it.

Other options are beta blockers like propranolol, which has helped me with practically no side effects or buspirone, which has no side effects. It's a nonhypnotic anxiolytic.
