Fear of heart attack/stroke/dissociation. Aged 16.

Okay, so basically - since around March this year I've been in a constant state of feeling as though I'm not real. I'm actually unsure how to explain it as i don't understand it myself, but its like being on autopilot or as though I'm not controlling my body. Along with this, my memory is terrible, i forget things almost immediately after doing it and so often lose things or fail to remember what people have told me.

Around the same time i started feeling this way I've been having periods of elevated heart rate/panicking as well as having unexplained pains all over my body, i never have any energy and all i want to do is sleep.

A few weeks ago i begged my mum to get me to A&E as i was having severe pains in my left side, with a very fast heart rate, i had an ECG which confirmed that my heart was beating irregularly and had to stay to be monitored. Doctors did tell me that it was a panic attack but i just cant seem to accept it as I'm so scared that I'm having a heart attack or stroke, i do smoke and know that this increases my chances of both conditions but again it seems to calm me down when i do feel anxious.

I just feel extremely alone and was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and could provide some insight as to how to cope with this or even just someone to speak to. My family and friends are aware but its difficult as they don't understand how i feel.

Sorry for the long post, and thank you for reading.

Megan.

Hello

I think so many of us have had the same fear , in fact another member has posted after you saying they are worried over something similar

You have to remember that a Doctor would not send you home saying it was a panic attack if they thought it was anything else and they are trained to pick up on anything serious :-)

I smoke to and yes I know I should stop and even though they say smoking actually makes you more anxious when you are a smoker it certainly does not feel like it does like you say it feels like it calms you down

What I would do is go and see my Doctor , explain how you are feeling just like you have on here , you could even take a copy of this post and let them read it if you struggle to talk and see what they can offer you support wise , it does not always have to be meds if that is something that does not appeal there is therapy to , but we have to let them know we are struggling to get any support :-)

Take Care x

Megan,I 'm so sorry you are having these problems.I've had panic attacks off and on for years. If I take xanax it helps alot, but it's hard to get.Panic attacks are very hard to diagnose, but make a journal. It may help you explain.Feel better!

Your feeling unreal is called depersonalisation.

It's a way your mind protects you from the intensity of certain feelings

I had it very badly from 12 onwards..It's very common and there are DP sites

This is what helped me..many years later

I took Bachs Flower Rescue Remedy, stopped eating gluten..that made an incredible difference, and learnt some deep breathing excercises..not had a panic attack for years now.sounds like you have some brain fog and PTSD too..

Was there a trauma in your family?..don't have to tell me..just good to be aware.

Can you go to your doctor and ask for counselling?

I know exactly how you feel,

You won't have it for long ..mine started from a severe trauma and never had therapy/treatment. You can get better Megan

Ps you could google DP and join some sites..You'll get even more help/awareness there.

Best Wishes for your full recovery

Jenny :-)
