I was trying to breathe in sync with my wife last night to calm myself, and it didn't help. I was up all night after 3am trying to fall back asleep. I realized earlier today that when I try to breathe deep and slow I'm breathing into the top of my chest. While looking online this morning I found this article that explains some belly breathing techniques: anxieties.com/57/panic-step4

I was able to calm myself later this morning from a panic attack by using what they describe here as the "Calming Breath". I closed my eyes and kept breathing like is described in that box until I got through the heart pounding and out of breath feeling. Then when I laid back down I focused on the "Natural Breathing" they describe here and I was able to fall asleep! The past week or so I've been waking up after 3-4 hours of sleep unable to fall back asleep, and this was so helpful for me. Breathe into your belly, not your chest! When you expand your stomach on inhale it lets your diaphragm drop down and your lower lungs expand farther. Hopefully you can find some benefit from this!

MrsBO8, you need to get out of bed and walk around, pacing. It will help reduce the adrenaline.

MrsBO8 When you get tired pacing, find a comfortable chair and start doing deep breathing. Don't worry about the sweating. The heart racing will subside as you start calming down. Slow deep breathes...the slower the better. You can sip some water if your mouth is getting dry. Your breathing is weird because you are shallow breathing. You will be okay, it will pass soon. xx

Hope you were okay! I get that all the time. I find getting out of bed and going into the living room helps, otherwise I just lay there feeling weird and worrying my wife is going to wake up. So I just get up, go into the next room. Pace (as someone mentioned before) get a chamomile tea and try and read a book or something. A lot of these times I end up sleeping on the sofa. But thats ok
