Iv`e just been to see my gp for a form to take to the clinic for my yearly cholesterol check, & he told me that if it`s still the same as last time (6.8), he wants me to go on statins. I`m fed up with hearing about these wonder drugs, because I tried some once, & they made me so exhausted & achy that I had to stop taking them. I know that I`m at risk for a heart attack thanks to my mother & her lousy genes, but the side effects of statins are unacceptable to me. My gp thinks that I`m making to much of a few aches & pains, but I could barely walk after a couple of months on them. Is there an alternative to statins that don`t have such terrible side effects? I hate my mother for putting me in this situation!

Doctor nagging about statins.
Hello
I am not sure if you can blame your Mother , I think so many of us have high cholesterol and so many do not have Mothers that suffered with it , it can just be one of those things , I had a Dad that had heart problems and then cancer and a Mum that had thrombosis I really hope and pray I don't suffer with any of these things but if I did I could not blame my parents and I did not have a good relationship with my Dad
My cholesterol however reads around the same as yours
There is a lot of debate on statins
Personally I have tried them and I got dreadful joint pains as well as bad headaches and I felt shocking so I do not take them
Some Doctors believe that they do not protect you against a heart attack where others say different , I really don't think they are 100% if they are good for you or not
So as the patient it is your choice and you cannot be forced to take them , personally I think Blood pressure is more important to keep stable and needs medication as that seems to be a bigger danger of leading to heart problems but this is just my opinion
Change of diet can help and there are Cholesterol lowing drinks and spreads that they say help you could try and if possible if just a short walk getting some kind of exercise can also help
On positive till you have had the test you never know it could be reading a lot better and no need to make a decision but when you do you have to make the right one for you and I am sure you will
Take Care x
I started taking statins....same reason as the rest of us. I just thought i'd give it a go after having been nagged so much about taking them. I was OK at first, then the nightmares and insomnia started and aching. So GP changed to another brand...OK at first then the IBS like symptoms and aching started....so changed to another brand.....(doctors by now were probably thinking I was bonkers......) guess what? Yep that's it... I am yet to go back and tell them as I have other things going on now........No family history of heart problems by the way, just good old Hypothyroid, bless it.......
