Ibs: Hi everyone I've been told by my doctor... - Anxiety Support
Ibs
Hi Lynn,my friend has IBS and I do know there are medication you can get.Ask the pharmacist for advice x
HI Lynne x I have some ibs due to anxiety x Its not as bad as some get it so I count myself lucky x I think a lot of anxiety sufferers get it as its bad digestion due to the body doing so much other stuff x I think the best way to manage it is to keep a diary of foods you eat and find which are the triggers x Once you have the understanding of this you can avoid to keep a happy system x In emergency you can buy over counter tablets to help such as senokat etc x but i would advise to speak to your doc and ask for the advice on diet and such x Donver x
Hi Lynne
I suffer with IBS & have had some really bad times with it but as already said this seems to be something a lot of anxiety sufferers get
Did your GP give you any advice at all or suggest any meds ?
I used to take 2 different kinds for mine , then managed to just take one & at the moment I have managed to drop the other one of at some stage I may have to take them again if it flares up of , but it is settled at the moment
I found Manuka honey which you can get from places like Tesco , it has to be the 10+ one though which I started taking 3 teaspoons a day & as it settled dropped it to one teaspoon , if I feel it flaring up I go back on to 3 teaspoons again has worked really well for me , it took a couple of weeks before it settled my stomach & it is £10 a jar but I really have found it has been worth it , even though it may not have the same effect on everyone
Also peppermint , you can get teas that are suppose to be good, even though I have not tried them myself
I found looking at what I ate & changing my diet really helped as well , as certain foods can really trigger mine of , spicy & greasy food , cakes are some of the main culprits , it did take me a while to realize what foods did but once I did & I stopped eating them it helped to improve it to even though now & again I do eat these things as I cant resist but I get ready because I know it will trigger it of so I have to pay the price if I do !
You could ask the chemist or in the health food shops as I am sure there are things they might be able to recommend
If it doesn't settle then I would go back to your GP & ask what they can prescribe you to help

Hi Lynne
I have suffered with ibs for many years and is definitely triggered by stress and certain foods set it off, for me it tends to be fatty/ rich foods or bread. I find probiotic yogurts help along with peppermint tea and my medication from doctors.

Hi Lynne. As others have said IBS and anxiety can be tied together. I think many of us deal with this. For me lactose intolorence also plays a role. There are many meds out there to assist, but if you want to try not med approach, an elimination diet helps. For me that's what I did to find some triggers. It's amazing how important gut health is. I also take probiotics to aid me with stomach issues. Ginger tea and peppermint tea as others have mentioned are also great.
Hi, I too have IBS and have had for years, I used to think it was just certain foods I ate, but later, realised that my anxiety makes it worse. IBS for me can be either a very loose upset tummy, or constipation. For the upset tummy I take Immodium (which can be purchased over the counter) and for the constipation I take Docusate (this can be purchased over the counter). I am fortunate enough to get them on prescription. Perhaps if you have an exemption certificate or a pre-payment certificate you could ask your doctor to prescribe them for you, otherwise, its probably cheaper to buy them over the counter. I hope this may help.
Best wishes Tracy
