Distraction is good. Deep breathing by putting one hand on your tummy and one on your chest and breathe in for a count of 5 pushing you tummy out, hold for 2, breathe out for 7 pushing your tummy in.

Listening to music, relaxation, going for a walk, talking to someone.

I hope one of those helps xxxx

Hi Colin, use the breathing method Lizard talks about, it really helps.

Maybe try some Tapping; Find it on youtube, under emotional freedom technique. I find it works very well for me x

Hi,

I have suffered a lot from panic attacks in the past and overcame them eventually by doing Yoga whilst in the middle of one! It seems to work by allowing your brain to reassign that feeling to a real physical cause for increased heartbeat and allows you to relax enough to overcome it slightly before it eases naturally.

My triggers seemed to be caffeine/alcohol/chocolate so it may be an idea to try to reduce these if you can and also weirdly being on holiday (although I did go in for adventurous holidays which may have had something to do with it too!).

Doing any kind of physical exercise would probably also help, although I am no expert in this.

It is truly horrible while it is all going on but you can definitely get to a stage where you do get over this phase. I haven't had one now for many years and I think it helps to really try to understand why they are happening and realise that it won't always be the case.

Best wishes and really hope you can get some relief soon.

Hi Colin & welcome to the site

I am sorry you are experiencing these awful panic attacks , I no how frightening they can feel when you are having one

The Breathing is a good way to try & control them , but this takes time & practice

The good old fashioned way of breathing in a paper bag as well , can be one of the most simplest ways to regulate your breathing when you are experiencing this

When we start to have a panic attack , straight away we feel fear & the more we fear the worse the attack feels , if you can just take a few seconds & remember this is a panic attack & as unpleasant as it is , it wont harm you & let it come & go again

These suggestions all take practice though , so dont think can master it straight away or if you cant , stop trying , because it will come in time

Have you been to see your GP about how you feel , if you have i would go back again , if not I would go & explain how you are feeling as well as this site & everyone will support you , maybe talking to your GP , would also be a good idea

Hope you will benefit from talking to others on here that have or do feel the same as you & it will help you to no you are not alone with this :)

Love

Hi Colin

I suffer panic attacks periodically. They can appear at any time for no apparent reason and they are horrendous. Just ride the attack out. Sit down and let it just happen, deep breaths in and out. Know that they can't kill you or harm you even though you might feel that's happening. My doctor prescribes diazepam which is great for treating anxiety and panic attacks. Take care

hi leximina and everyone,i seen doctor and he has given me diazepam too,5mg tabs, they seem to work well,i had a heart attack over two years ago and i had a fight with a neighbour a few weeks ago,i think the fight has started off something in me as i start to fear for no reason, the feelings i get are like am about to have a heart attack, the fear is terrifying,my heart races then i get waves of anxiety running through me,tingles, aches, head gets hot, then eventually it seems to run its course and stops, the diazepam has always stopped it when i have taken one, then there are days were i fell normal as if they never happened,i just dont understand it at times, anyway,THANKS EVERYONE for trying to help me.
