TRIGGER WARNING - I’m living with an abuser.

I am disabled, I have no living family and I’m living with an abuser when I call the police they separate us. Talk to us and then come back to tell me it will be OK. It’s not OK when he begins to abuse me I call to the shelters, but they have always been full. Have no family or friends in the area. I’m not sure what to do. I can’t even run away from him when he starts hurting me.

Hi sorry to hear this. Have you been here before? Your story sounds a bit familiar?

Welcome to the community.

I'm very sorry you are going through this.

Can't you press charges? Don't they ask you that when they come?

I actually have a very disturbing video. I was holding cell phone when he charged me from across the room and began hitting me. The video is clear until it is punched out of my hand and hits the floor and then you can just hear the rest. The police do nothing they separate us into separate rooms. Each person tells their story, and then they go away

If there are no consequences for hurting me and he will continue to do it. I have no family, social services and shelters are full or unable to help. The other day he bent both of my knees backwards as far as he could until they popped and I am an extreme pain.

The police don’t do a thing.

It seems to me that the type of abuse you are dealing with would be punishable by law. There are laws that protect disabled people. I don't know the nature of your disability.

I've never been in this situation but it sounds to me like getting out might save your life. Can you go to the hospital? You've been physically attacked and you are in extreme pain, reach out for some help

Hi Sunnyday100,

I am sorry that you are not living with a person who respects you.

I believe that you should be able to lodge a complaint with your local police department chief about the lack of positive action from the police attendances.

The American Association of People With Disabilities should be able to give you further advice about your rights.

Wishing you the best in sorting out the abuser

You said social services were no help. Can I ask what were you requesting from them? Did you speak with adult protective services person? You mentioned shelters, are these homeless shelters or protective shelters? Just asking because here we have a domestic abuse safety shelter. No one can enter freely and they don’t tell anyone who’s there. I agree with the others that abuse is a crime. Try to speak to the DA in your area and see what can be done to protect you. There are laws protecting disabled people. Do you rent or own your place? If it’s in your name you can evict him. It takes 30 days though. These are all just suggestions. I hope you can find a way out. ❤️

I was looking for a place to stay while he was in his fit of rage. Generally, he has a fit of rage which winds up and me getting hurt and then he calms down if I had a place to go for the evening I could avoid getting hurt.

I call county women’s shelter and there is nothing available. Everything is always “full up” which leaves me no place to go.

I went and sat in my car one night in front of my house and the police came by and told me I could not stay in my car, but I had nowhere else to go other than in the house. They told me they were sorry for that, but I could not stay in my car in front of my house, it’s my house. It’s my driveway. Why not? he told me they did not want to arrest me, but I had to go inside the house. I cannot sit in the driveway or in front any longer.

I never contacted disabilities yet. I didn’t know that I could if there was anything they could do.

What state do you live in so I can help find a local shelter?

There is only one shelter near me, which means 13 miles away and it is full. Every time I have called. I have connected to Hotline in my area who have given me the local resources. Unfortunately, they are overwhelmed.

You might try the churches/missions in your area to see if they can be of help to you.
