Bucksnort442544, allow me to extend my deepest sympathy on the loss of your infant

son. Losses and sickness can very well set the pattern for anxiety to settle in. Counseling

does help as you address the issues causing these fears and symptoms.

And yes, anxiety keeps your interest and holds you prisoner by jumping from one symptom

to another. This ends up keeping your adrenaline coursing through your body constantly.

Just a split second thought or something you hear or see, can cause that

adrenaline to spike and bring on the physical symptoms.

The feeling in not being able to catch a full breath is very common and at the top of

anxiety's sick game. The more we try to breathe, the harder it seems.

If you need to know anything, remember this. That feeling has nothing to do with your

heart or lungs. It comes from a tightening of your diaphragm. (because of your tenseness)

Fighting that feeling only makes it worse.

Best thing to do, is to bring down your shoulders which are probably up to your ears by

this time. That will put you in a more relaxed position. It you can, start watching videos

on YouTube regarding proper breathing exercises. I use to sometimes jump up and down

a couple times which relaxed those muscles. Some therapists state that yawning can

help bring in more oxygen which will relax those tense muscles. Breathing in Calm and

exhaling stress can help lower the adrenaline levels as well.

Everything takes time. Do not expect perfection when first starting to learn methods

that will help you. I'd like to Welcome you to this caring support community. We learn

from each other's experiences with these mental health issues. You're in a good place

now. Let us help you :) xx

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. It’s terrifying when you feel you can’t breathe and easy to lose yourself in panic.

Agora1’s advice is so spot on. I second the breathing exercises. Box breathing has been incredibly helpful for me when I start to tighten my throat. I also find that the counting aspect helps to distract my mind just long enough to break out of any thought cycles I’m spiraling into. Breathe in for 5 counts, hold breath for 5, exhale for 5, hold for 5, repeat.

You can get through this. It’s so hard when you’re trying to deal with new expressions of anxiety as they pop up- but you can do it, I promise. You’re already doing all the right things by reaching out for help and you’ll learn so many little tricks and skills to help you as you go. You’re not alone!
