How do I stay in the present?

I keep thinking about my past and worrying about my future.

When you figure it out, please let me know. I think it's the 65 million dollar question. I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I just feel your pain. Hugs 🫂

As they say the past is done leave it there and the future has not come yet so stay in the present the here in the now so you can live and explore life the way that you were meant to do. Staying completely in the present takes time and dedication to say the least cuz I'm guilty of going back to my past all the time cuz I suffer from childhood trauma which affected me all the way into adulthood and gave me self-esteem issues and self-loathing problems so in we exploring them with my psychotherapist Dr Michael Nover it druged up a lot of old memories for me. They say don't worry about the past it'll take care of itself so stay in the present to hear in the now and be with the people that are here with you and celebrate you and support you that's what you need to do. Wishing you luck and all that you do, peace and well-being.

Hi Fall1224, time to psychoanlyze what worrying about the past and the future get you.

Nothing...It no longer exists. When we get stuck in that position, we go nowhere but

around and around. The present moment is all we have. It's factual, it's real, it's our

key to moving on. The other thing is that when we stay in the present moment, we

can feel safe and secure. Even for that little while, it can have benefits in reducing

your anxiety, your heart rate, your blood pressure and your thoughts.

It takes work. It's a retraining of your brain and your thoughts. But so well worth it.

YouTube is my "go to" in learning while listening to the many great videos including

"staying in the present moment" My best to you :) xx

Hello,

I, too, have been down a rabbit hole lately, feeling stupid about past mistakes and scared about the future. I am seeing an online therapist, and she gave me a visualization. See a stop sign when you are rabbiting, and know that your options are to go left, right or forward. And don;t stay there too long at the stop sign, because people behind you will be honking at you. Forward seems like a logical choice. I am a visual learner, so this works for me. I hope things get better for you. Breathe.

There are many techniques to help you stay in the present.

The 5, 4,3,2,1 technique where you focus your attention on your immediate surroundings and name 5 things you can SEE, 4 things you can HEAR, 3 things that you can FEEL (can be your feet on the ground, wind in your hair, pain, etc.), 2 things you can SMELL, and 1 thing you can TASTE.

That is just one of many grounding techniques. You can Google others.

Staying in the present is possible. It takes a lot of practice!

I'm going to give you a rhyme which helps me stay focused on the here and now:

Yesterday is History,

Tomorrow is a Mystery.

All we have is Now and that is the Gift.

Basically it reminds you that you cannot go back and change things which have happened, You do not know what the Future will bring, but you have got Today, so make the most of it!

Cheers, Midori
