Tired of my situation
How long have you been on medication and how long have you been in therapy? It is great that you have hope.
I started therapy 3 months ago and I've been on medication for 5 years.
Oh I was hoping you had just started and that you just needed to give it more time. Who is prescribing your medication a psychiatrist or general practitioner?
Psychiatrist.
Have you talked to them about maybe changing meds or have you already been trying different meds?
Yeah I talked to them.
Were they open to changing your meds or increasing the dose?
They were open to change the meds.
Are you open to it?
Yeah of course.
Well I would definitely recommend you try that. That may be what it takes to make things better for you.
Thank you. I think I'm just struggling to trust the process.
It is hard especially because you have been on meds for so long. Do you like the therapist you are seeing?
Yeah he's okay I wish he would give me more hope though he gives me anxiety sometimes.
Do you think it might be worth thinking about trying another therapist to see if someone new would be more able to help you?
I've been thinking about that but I'm not sure if I want to do that yet.
It is good that you are thinking about it. You don't have to make a decision yet. It is nice to just keep that as an option if you don't feel like you are making the progress you hope to make.
Yeah I'm not ready to do that rightnow because he is a good therapist.
If he is a good therapist do you feel like you could open up to him and tell him what you need from him. Like more hope. Or to discuss that he gives you anxiety sometimes. Maybe you can work it out with him.
It took me a while to get better with therapy. First months were rough. I started to feel better but I really hit my stride in the last couple of months which was around the one year mark. Do you feel any improvement? It might take some time.
It's tough to find the right meds. I went through trying several different meds with various combinations for years. I didn't like the side effects and wasn't sure I was feeling better on them. I finally just went off them because I was over being a test dummy. I had really bad withdrawal symptoms (which was right before and at the start of the pandemic so bad timing) and I've had some times where I considered going back on something. But I honestly feel better without them than when I was on them. I started taking herbal meds and they work pretty well for me without side effects. Obviously, don't take this as any medical advice, but it might be worth discussing with your doctor if it makes sense maybe going off them or looking at more natural options.
Sometimes meds don't work like people think they should, for example, my SSRI only takes the edge off my depression, it does not cure it or completely take it away. But also some meds don't work. As far as hoping and wanting for things to change, I have to say that if I don't do the footwork, things won't change.
If you think you’ve given your medication an adequate amount of time to work, maybe you need a change and should talk to your prescriber. I know I always want an immediate response and patience is definitely not one of my virtues. But you know your own body and mind and should trust it. I’m glad you have hope; that’s a really positive thing. Good luck.
