This is Shnookie. The trauma I witnessed was on a weekly basis for around thirty years. I’m Jewish, and my grandmother was a Holocaust survivor. Every Friday night, when I went to my grandparents house to welcome in the Jewish Sabbath, my grandmother lit the Sabbath candles. Instead of saying a simple prayer to bless the family, she would weep inconsolably and speak to her departed parents in Yiddish, the language of the Jews in Eastern Europe that she felt guilty that she could not save them. Terrible survivor’s guilt and with what is going on in the news, I have been triggered.
Understand, though, my Grandparents were living in Russia in constant Trauma because of their Jewish faith. Their villages set on fire, Russian soldiers coming into their homes putting knives on the table, my Grandmother hiding in closets, under blankets. Not being able to go to school. Finally, coming to America & finding some relief. Subtle Antisemitism which seems to be getting worse these days -- Of course, it's AWFUl what's going on in the news. However, many groups have been "beaten down," murdered, suffered Severe Trauma which goes down from generation to generation.
I was talking about my personal experience. Anti-Semitism has not been subtle in America. There were areas in the country where Jews were not permitted to live and Jews were not allowed access to study to study in a number of Educational institutions. During the Holocaust. many Jews were not allowed to enter the U.S.as political refugees. Of course there have many groups of people who have been persecuted. What I meant was hearing words like immigrants poison American blood triggered terrible memories for me and Hitler with the Nazi ideal of Judenrein - cleansing of the Jews from Europe.
Thank you very much. I’m so sorry that your family had to go thru the Pogroms in Russia My mother’s father was from the Ukraine and they witnessed horrific things like that as well. Now more than ever with everything that is going on in the world, it is important that we support each other in HU. Have a peaceful Wednesday S
