As we celebrate women worldwide today and throughout March, let’s also focus on women’s mental health. 1 in 8 women experiences depression, while women from puberty to age 50 are twice as likely to develop an anxiety disorder than men in that age range. Although many factors contribute to women and girls experiencing anxiety and depression, ADAA is spotlighting different ways we can support and uplift women and their #MentalHealthJourney
I think as many men suffer as women but they are much more likely to be undiagnosed as they are usually more reluctant to see a doctor for fear of being thought 'weak'.
I think they are also more likely to turn to other methods of coping too ie alcohol. It's no coincidence that the biggest single cause of death in the western world amongst men aged 25-40 is suicide.
If only they could understand that it's not a sign of weakness to seek help, but strength.
I remember in psychology class in high school(many moons ago) we were talking about neurosis and our teacher said, 'did you know that 95%(I don't actually remember what # he gave but it was high) of all people that experience neurosis are women?'. I raised my hand and said, 'did you know that 95% of people that cause it are men?' He laughed and gave me brownie points on the blackboard. He was a great teacher, Mr Hartwell.
