What is that thing?

Look around you right now. What objects surround you? Why are they there? Comfort? Tradition? Too lazy to move it somewhere else, like the wrapper from your last snack? Some things are meaningless, like that plastic water bottle, while other things wield a stronger pull in our lives. What is that thing?

For me, I'm at my desk, and I see a dust cloth. It's there so I can dust every now and then when I'm free. So typical of me to have things clean and neat. What about you?

That sounds so much like my desk.

Right now, my tv is dark cuz I’m listening to my music playlist list by Alexa (echo dot). I’m also shying away from YouTube cuz I can’t share music here anymore and I can’t access it either. Peoples past music that I’ve enjoyed here for so long is gone. Im more than sad….my surroundings just remind me of what I’ve lost and as so many others have lost. 💔

My blankets on my couch are disheveled and I don’t care. It’s chilly and I don’t care. There’s a few things scattered about and I don’t care. There’s a big empty box of toilet paper on my porch I’m eyeballing that needs to be binned and I don’t care. I guess you might say I’m depressed. Sorry, Lady…I thought your post would lift me up a bit as they usually do, but this time there’s only one thing that could make me happy. I’ll put on my happy face anyway….the polish on my toes still looks good.

Actually, this was a writing prompt about characterization. You've captured your emotions well. While you may be depressed, I liked the ending of your "essay" -- the glimmer of hope in your toe nails. It's even more significant because your feet represent the journey you will take. Good job!

I'm also listening to classic rock, Alice in Chains, and so on. I did clean one of the countertops in the kitchen. Avoiding any kind of social media, world news is a real depressor.

Classic rock…..I think of rock as in rock n roll. Im not familiar with Alice In Chains. World news is a downer and I try to limit, but how can we change things if we don’t know what needs changing. It takes the masses to make a difference.

My desk is cluttered but 98% of it has a use. Medications, hand tools, computer cables, and a coffee cup

It's nice to have things within reach.

My desk is a mess. My office tends to end up a dumping ground whenever someone doesn't know where to put something. But let me see… My coffee mug which rarely leaves my side whether it has coffee, water, root beer, or anything else in it. I won't post what it says because it could be considered inflammatory.

My telescopic back scratcher my wife got me as a gift years ago. Has seen much use.

A wizard figurine my son carved from wood.

Protoman's helmet on a stand. Honestly don't remember how I ended up with this.

My trusty work lamp. I had a hard time finding this. I wanted a desk lamp I could angle over the desk but not shine in my eyes because I like to work in lamp light. It has adjustable temperature too which is great for eye fatigue, especially when it's cloudy or dark outside.

Some things hanging on the walls I made a lifetime ago in school… A dog embossed on a metal sheet, stained and mounted on a wood plaque.

Wow, that's a lot of unique and interesting stuff, despite the mess. A lot of character in those items.

I haven't read those. I have a couple of unpublished novels. So I'm mostly reading and writing flash fiction to build my credentials. Are you on any sites to help you get feedback on your writing?

I see my oxygen tank. There because its the only place in my lounge to put it. I see my walking frame in front of me. There for ease of use

Sounds like it takes up a good amount of space.

I'm in the midst of getting out my Halloween decorations, stuffing bags with sweets to give out and planning how to arrange my display this year!. So there's stuff everywhere!

Cheers, Midori

I've done that every year for the past 25 years. My youngest is a senior in high school this year, so I decided to skip Halloween decorations starting this year. Woo-hoo! But I'll start back up when I have grandkids.
