Reverse S.A.D.? Is that a thing?

It's been blistering HOT here on the U.S. West Coast. Record temps and wildfires..

Any "spare rain" around?

I'm not a fan of Summer. period. I've lived in several different climate zones. Grew up in Phoenix ,AZ aka "Fort Stinkin' Desert". Dealt with the heat and humidity of Vietnam. Summer always puts me in a funk. I live like a lizzard running form cool spot to cool spot to survive.

I get depressed and hibernate. I'm loathe to go out unless necessary.. I almost (almost) envy those of you who love the summer heat and all that. I don't get how you do it? I can't figure it out.

Anybody else? Or is it just me?

On the bright side. I think I'm less prone for melanoma as I limit my sun exposure.

🤔Hmmm Definitely sounds like reverse S A D to me. The doctor recommends intense hydration, stay inside for the next three months, crank the a/c down and keep your hat on. 🤠⛑

Thanks " Doc " I'm already on board with that idea. 😃✌🏻👌🏻

I think it is reverse SAD in my opinion I don’t like it when It’s hot

I'd say its good ol' fashion heat intolerance that's affecting your mood and body. I'm sorry to hear that summer for you is as fun as poking your eye with a toothpick. Canadians crawl outta winter hibernation when summer hits.

Step out out just before dawn or after sunset for some fresh air and keep yourself hydrated and cool as possible. Hope your mood improves

in reply to Imaaan

Thanks Imaaan. I have acquired a boat load of coping mechanisms for this situation. Some are better than others.. Hydration is a must year round. However summer is the worst. IMy post was to find out if I'm the only one who experiences the same thing.

I feel the same way. I dread the high heat and humidity in the NYC area. It is about the same as having 10 feet of snow. There is just nothing you can do except wait for it to pass and drink water and stay as cool as possible. Very depressing.

in reply to b1b1b1

Agree, You can always find a way to be warm. But you can only so as far as your skin and A/C to be cool on an on going basis.

I am a desert denizen and being that does have it's drawbacks. I've been in the desert most of my 50+ years of life and the older I get the less heat tolerant I am. Still, I love where I live. Southwestern US. And SAD isn't dependent on winter: it can happen in the summer too. I know a number of my friends who get depressed or anxious with the heat. Depressed and/or anxious about water, electricity, lack of rain (water again), plants, animals. You name it.

So yeah.

Definitely a thing.

Right I thought SAD wasn't restricted to winter. Operant noun "Seasonal" AS I noted I grew up in Az and spent about half my life there. I also have become less tolerant of the heat as I age. In fact I'm less tolerant about a lot of things..but that's for a different "room" Ironically I still live in the SW US. I thought 5545' elevation would alleviate the heat. Wrong thinking. However Summer here only (usually) lasts until Late September. So I deal with it.

Heh, part of becoming the 'old guy' or 'geezer' if you prefer. I tell my staff I'm so 'old school' I helped build the school.

:)

Where I live you can't really count on cooling down until after Halloween. But at least we're not in Death Valley.

👻👺💀😈👽

Good one! Death Valley oh right Been there done that no thanks you. I'm an "old School Fool" myself. Before I retired, I worked with "kids" in their twenties and thirties. They used to call me "Pinche` Viejo" or "F ing old man" It was said with love and respect. They used to be in a kind of awe knowing that I was around before the internet and cell pones..😁

"You mean you actually had to look in a book to find an address or phone number?"

"Yes: they were called the Yellow or White Pages."

Yeah, every year you got this huge newspaper-paper book, fine print. Two of them in a big city! Made great booster seats for kids. My dad would put last year’s in the car, for occasional reference. I’m enjoying this aspect of getting old, a lot. Memories of things like Dictaphones in offices.

Typewriters…anybody remember “white out”? 😁 Calling the operator for free and asking how many ounces in a pint?😂

We have a reconditioned phone from the 80's at home. Not Ma Bell, but the same design. It has a digital converter in it that changes tone to digital. Nothing is analog anymore *sigh*. I keep my landline because (a) I don't like talking on my cell all day (b) I've had the same number for over thirty years (c) friends and family know at night that is how to reach me as my cell is most likely off and charging.

Lengthening days in May and and the thought of “hot” weather sets me on edge. And now that I know that, it sets me on edge. Sigh. It’s never that bad when it actually arrives. We’re fortunate to have AC and we run our ceiling fans. Heat does kind of make me feel trapped, though.

I have grieved to the point of tears for the people in the western US this summer, especially the northwest.

I put “hot” in quotes because I grew up in a subtropical coastal area, really humid, no AC at first.

Days are getting shorter, Lazaruslong!

Can confirm...it's raining right now. I understand this. I love the summer because sunshine is nice and the days are longer. However, I've always found that the humidity messes with my mood and my mental state. Good luck to you!

LOL..Thanks

I can go with your idea of a reverse SAD. I have fibromyalgia, and both really hot and really cold weather floor me!

I love to see a blue sky and sunshine, out of a window, just as I love to see snow when I'm cosy indoors.

I'm really at my most comfortable in Spring and Autumn.

By the way, You asked for rain? London had storms and downpours yesterday, even the Tube (subway) was flooded all across West London. Enough rain for more than a month in a few hours! (and they say Climate Change isn't happening!)I'd gladly send it to you!

Cheers, Midori

in reply to Midori

Right. I saw videos of flooding there. I believe New York city had the same problem. I'm with you on Autumn and Spring.

Climate Change? I haven't noticed 😉😀

Come over and visit the West Coast. Summer is beating us up.

Give me perpetual Fall with warm days, cool nights and the scent of fallen leaves. 🍁 Winter is awesome, too.
