Greetings!

I have been diagnosed with Bipolar and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. My most significant symptoms are related to depression and anxiety. I joined this group hoping to connect with other individuals who have experienced (or are experiencing) some of the challenges that I have. I am hoping to share some strategies that have helped me, but more importantly, to learn from others. I find that remaining connected is one of the best things we can do. I look forward to a wonderful experience. Thank you for accepting me into this group.

Welcome to the community! Many of us are in the same boat and have found support and encouragement on here. I have been dealing with depression and anxiety my entire adult life. Always good to know we are not alone.

I suffer from GAD. Luckily it has not been as often as in the past. Sometimes it likes to sneak up on me when I let my guard down. Do you have a specific trigger?

Having to make a decision on a fly is a big trigger. Yesterday, I was using a public restroom and a woman began knocking on the door very loudly. I nearly went into a panic attack. She waited 30 seconds and then began to knock loudly again. I did go into a panic attack. After I exited the restroom and gathered myself, I questioned why I rushed, panicked, or didn't just curse her out. But the ability to make decisions in the moment doesn't exist for me. If I had paused and did a 10 second breathing exercise, I guarantee you I could have responded more appropriately. I need to gather a collection of exercises to complete in moment. What helps you?

Breathing helps me as well. Also think about what I have to be grateful for. First up I always think of my grands. I have for 2 boys 2 girls. Making decisions on the fly is tough. You don't see it coming. No time to prepare. How did you come up with your name I find it interesting. Mind self explanatory I am a big fan of trains every since I was a little boy and I am 63 now. Hope you have better days ahead. Rick

If I ever had more children (which I won't), these two names would be their names. That's how I came up with the names. Breathing helps but sometimes I forget in the moment. Actually, I stop breathing. Sometimes I isolate myself so I don't have to make those decisions on the fly. That isn't healthier either.

Being more mindful in ordinary situations helps. I often try to distract myself but that just leads to panic and anxiety.
