Career Pain

Today I found out some devasting news. A job that I love has not been providing a pension. This truly devasted me because I really thought I finally had a good career. I thought I was on top of world at 45. Now I feel completely defeated and wanting to leave California.

I just feel this state has disappointed me so many times regarding my career search and today was just devasting. Today I think it was the last straw. It would upset my girlfriend and friends but I would like to look elsewhere. I am not a native of this state and now I am just done. Just done.

I know these people don't want me to stay here but maybe I should have moved away a long time ago.

To be 45 and no state pension. I am just hurt. I wanted this so bad for retirement.

At this moment I just feel worthless and that my job was for nothing.

All I can say is yes, that sucks. But think very carefully before deciding to move somewhere else. You have a girlfriend and connections there.

What "Fieytb," says is very valid about moving somewhere else. I would try to go back and try to negotiate a pension with your employer or look for a better job in the same area or nearby that does offer one. Rather than making giant leaps, look into minor changes first to get what you want because you have some connection where you live. If all else fails, find a better job in a new state, but do your research and persuade your girlfriend to move with you.

California is not easy to live in because it has been popular for so long. I know because I came to Oregon from Indiana many years ago, and to which many Californian move to out of frustration with California. (We now have many of the same problems starting to occur, such as homelessness, school funding problems, and high housing costs. etc.) And remember that no place is perfect; instead, the decisions and connections you make create the difference.

You put it into a smart plan with saying don't make giant leaps into minor changes.
