I suffer badly with depression and anxiety. This has become awful due to retirement. I have a physiatrist who prescribed medication and I have problems with treatment resistant depression . I have to distract myself frequently.

welcome! You have come to the right place! You’ll learn a lot from others posting and posting more details if you are feeling up to it! I can empathize leaving the work force. I was forced to leave my 25 year career due to health. I loved my job and mostly the people I came to know. It can certainly be difficult transition for many.
I have to work six more years and then I can retire. I am somewhat dreading it because of my anxiety and depression. I need a routine and it will take a lot of preplanning before retirement for me to have things in place to help me cope. I already know I will worry about not having enough money, it will probably be best for me to have a part time job that requires me to be social. I want to travel but there is a lot of fear there.
How do you distract yourself?
I do a small bit of volunteering which is two sessions a month. I read and got out for coffee. I retired because I wasn’t too well and you’re right to prepare for retirement it’s not easy. We looked after grand children two days a week but they have gone to nursery so that’s reduced. Retirement has caused my depression and anxiety so plan ahead. There are no days off .
