Has anyone ever witnessed a family member/friend (particularly a pre-teen) undergo a trancelike state while on either fluoxetine, olanzapine, or a combination of both? In particular, this trance can be rather violent with episodes of screaming, running, and acting like a scared animal. Sometimes, hitting, kicking, and pushing can be involved. The kid has bitten me and has tried to chew their fingers. All the while, the kid does not speak.
In other instances, these trances are much more mild, but still concerning. They involve mumbling (“mumma, mumma”), calling out for a deceased relative (“Poppy, Poppy”), slobbering, and walking around in a very disoriented manner.
The episodes are often preceded by twitching of the shoulders and contortion of the face.
This child has been to the ER twice in the last few weeks. Their therapist and health care providers have been informed about these spells. The problem is that the kid snaps out of it before arriving at the ER, so no medical professionals have witnessed what we have. EMS, the Fire Department, law enforcement, and school staff have witnessed either the violent episodes or the mumbling/stumbling episodes, but they don’t have any idea what it is or what’s causing it.
Does anyone have any idea what these spells (both violent and nonviolent) could be? Any ideas on how to get them to snap out of it?
Thank you.
