What makes you feel better?

Hi friends, hope everyone is doing okay. I know things can be hard. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning the first thing I feel is a heavy wave of sadness. Due to circumstances I am currently unemployed, but in the works of getting a job. Not having a routine to take my mind off things is hard. So when I wake up and already feel set back, I turn on some meditation videos and fall back asleep.

However, sometimes these random pangs of sadness hit when I'm alone and have no one available to reach out to. So my question is, what helps you feel better in those moments of loneliness/Sadness?

(I like music but I'm kinda particular about my music. Most of my favorite songs are kinda sad, so I tend not to rely on music when feeling down. Definitely open to suggestions:)

Change your scenery.

Go on a trail walk or visit your local park. Try a new cafe or the library. Even if you just go for a walk around your neighborhood that is a change of pace from sitting in the house.

All of these are free or very low cost.

getting outside is key.

The morning was the hardest part of the day in my darkest days. Making the morning something to look forward to is possible which sets up the rest of your day. I like coffee so I started making craft coffee. A plastic drip filter is cheap and the coffee is much better than a machine. Beans are cheaper than pods. I added muffins. They are not great for you but getting me up is more important. I also either doodle, play a simple game, listen to a podcast. Today I still listen to podcasts but my breakfast is the best most healthy part of the day. I even make breakfast if I have to get up at 4.

The reason for that long explanation is they are habits. I don’t think about whether I should. They are automatic. That is routine. Meditation is actually a good start. Maybe add outside air or tea with caffeine which is a light mood lifter. Move to the living room and light a candle. Those are just ideas.

As for being unemployed I have some suggestions there too. I work in tech so I’ve been laid off more than once plus I did contract which makes looking part of the career. So I suggest scheduling the job hunt like a job because it is. A few hours 5 days a week. (I think applying on Sunday gets your email in their inbox on Monday so think strategically.) Go to your local workforce center to connect with others, take workshops or just use the desks. Or go to the library. Both places probably have computers and Wi-Fi if you don’t have a laptop.

For the rest of the day do something cheap. Go for a walk in a park you have never been to. Look for free museum days (some states have them every quarter.) find a lecture. Check meetup groups. Movie studios actually partner with movie groups to offer free screenings. Being around other people just for the energy can help. Start a hobby. These are examples of things you can’t do as easily while working so take advantage of it. Time is money too!
