How do you deal with anixety attacks?

Recently, I have been feeling very overstimulated. I get anxious about everything in my life. This can sometimes lead to what I know as an anxiety attack. I am in therapy and have been given some tips by my therapist, but was wondering if anyone else has special thing they do to help or prevent.

I also sometimes get them when I am driving due to previously being in a car accident.

I also get panic/anxiety attacks. I feel like here lately for the past 2 months I’ve been in a daily state of anxiety. It’s so hard. I understand how you feel.

Some things that help me: walking (getting fresh air), journaling my thoughts, giving myself a set worry time (maybe 15 min?) then not allowing myself to worry any more about that particular topic (mine is usually meetings at work), studying the Bible, yoga, meditation.. I’m sure there’s more. I’ll keep thinking! If you are interested at all in yoga and meditation let me know and I’ll share the YouTube channels I like :)

Hi pinkpenguingirl :)

The "key" to limiting anxious feelings is to work on it daily. Practicing Meditation

and Breathing can eliminate or at least bring down that overstimulated feeling

that we all hate. Once you are in the throes of Anxiety, it takes longer to bring

yourself down from that level. What ends up happening is that you start fearing

the fear and breathing faster and BAM Anxiety takes control.

I never miss one day of Meditation/Breathing. Before going to bed and upon

awakening, I listen to about 15-20 minutes of calming relaxation before bed

and Affirmations and Imagery in the morning .

Trying different methods and having different tools can keep you on a more

even keel throughout the day as well as when a situation arises.

We are here to help each other through our own experiences on this journey :) xx

Agree with Wildflower13, walking outdoors and journaling work for me as well. They relieves most of my stress and anxiety.

I also find it useful to do something that forces me to stay completely focused, using full brain power: jigsaw puzzle, playing musical instrument, reading detective novels, gaming -- gaming only works if you know how to break it off. I never could, so it's not on my list any more.

The responders above have given you number of good suggestions. It sounds like you are suffering from a generalized anxiety disorder and will find things to worry about easily. Remember that it is the anxiety process that is important, not the specific thing you are worrying about. There are also specific techniques for desensitizing yourself to anxiety producing events.

One thing that I would add to the suggestions above is to get a copy of Feeling Great by David Burns. It is one of the best books on cognitive behavioral therapy written by a pioneer in the field. It will provide you with a lot of help if you actually do the exercises recommended in the book.

I found that a lot of the therapists i worked with really didn't know how best to deal with anxiety/panic. What helped me with panic/anxiety was learning that it is a paradox and the more we struggle with it or fight it the more it persists and the solution is to surrender to the anxious thoughts and feelings and learn to tolerate them temporarily as they pass through us. It takes time and practice and commitment to desensitize yourself but it works. Anxiety/panic is our builtin warning system that we all have but is malfunctioning, mistakenly believing that you are under some kind of a threat so you need to reassure it and yourself that you are actually safe.

You might also be suffering some degree of ptsd/trauma from your accident and may need therapy to help you resolve and deal with it if you are not already doing it. Emdr therapy has been proven to be successful for treating trauma/ptsd.

I found the DARE Anxiety book and youtube videos very helpful they have a specific video about driving anxiety as well as a phone app.

Hey! You’ve definitely gotten the best advice I could offer from everyone above. My first panic attack happened while driving, which made no sense as I loved driving and nothing was happening. But because of that very first one being in a car, driving is not something I enjoy doing because of fear of panic. Yours is probably about the accident you were in and fears it provoked in you. I found a therapist who is finally challenging my thoughts which was greatly needed. Mine had deep seated causes that I was not consciously aware of, but am now learning. Everyone here has such different backgrounds and experiences with anxiety so hopefully we can all give you different angles to think on. We’re all here for you with no judgement ever. Always here 😀
