Comorbidity anxiety disorder and depression

I currently have comorbidity anxiety disorder and depression. I went to Korea and did EEG and it shows that my brain function is none meaning parts of my brain are not functioning as they should be and also even if I sleep my brain does not get any rest by sleeping even if sleeping is done and also anxiety is at its highest. All these results are the result from EEG. Doctor suggested me to get TMS and medication. Symptoms I have with this diagnosis of comorbidity of depression and anxiety disorder is heart tightness. Area around my heart feels very discomforting time to time and it feels like outside force is compressing my heart area and it feels tight. I experienced very severe symptom of this and it made my hands numb when heart tightness peaked. I also have a symptom of hard to breathe sometimes. I tend to avoid being with people other than my family members because out of no intention from me heart tightness and discomfort comes and also with hard to breathe so it is very hard dealing with it and if it happens when around with people it feels much harder for me to deal. These symptoms occur both when I am alone and with people. I want to hear how people with same or similar symptoms like me recover to norm. Currently with one semester left of college I had to put a hold on it and tried working and work also was too hard. I am taking medications and it’s not as helping much and I am soon going to get TMS.

Hope TMS helps you! Since becoming treatment resistant to meds TMS had been my treatment of choice. I've had 3 rounds. The first 2 lasted about 6 months each and so far my last one has lasted about a year. It literally saved my life at one point. Obviously results vary person to person. Your physical symptoms sound a lot like they're from anxiety but you may want to get checked out to be sure. Hope you get to feeling better and are able to complete college!!

I am working myself to get TMS and doctor I met with in Korea after looking at result from my EEG brain wave scan he said it’s norm to receive 20 and for my case 40. How does TMS work? I received one in Korea in Korean version machine and it feels like I did not get any better. For you was it just three times that you took to make yourself better? I received one in Korea in Korean machine and it feels like it does not have any effect.

How many treatment sessions did you get in Korear? rTMS is normally 5x/week for 6-7 weeks per round. It wasn't that it took 3 times to make me better. I felt good after the first 2 rounds but for me the results of those only lasted 6 months. My 3rd round was done at a different place(SuccessTMS), that only does TMS, and I am still doing well after almost a year.

I only received just one time (literally one time only) and that was Korean version of TMS that got into Korea from US and it is a different one than what US TMS is but just US TMS that changed a little bit to be called not US TMS but Korea TMS. Doctor told me after looking at my EEG test result that normally a person needs to get 20 times of TMS but for me he said 40 times is necessary. He also said to get the best result, I have to receive one daily. So since I received Korea TMS that is kind of different from what USA TMS is I actually do not feel any result. Doctor said change would not be immediate but gradual. I know it's just one time literally one time that I received just to see how it is. I didn't yet receive 20 times which is a norm for a patient who needs TMS or 40 times especially for a person like me. Korea TMS is cheaper than US TMS that are both being offered in Korea so I just did the Korea TMS one time to see how it is but could not continue to 20 times and or 40 times like I wished to because the price was so high since I am a US resident trying to get TMS service in Korea. Doctor said I have comorbidity of depression and anxiety disorder.

Your doctor is correct saying improvement happens gradually. Some may not feel better until after a full round of treatment is complete(at 5x/wk for 6-7 weeks here). Luckily here in the US many insurances cover the cost of TMS, but not all do. I know it can be expensive. Fortunately mine covered the whole thing. When you said you got it once, did you mean one treatment or one round of treatments? One treatment won't do anything; it has a cumulative effect. And most people who have depression have anxiety as well. They usually go hand in hand. I hope you are able to find a way to continue treatment and have positive results. As with any treatment results vary ; for some it works for some it doesn't.. Wishing you well!!!

Literally one treatment like one time not one round but basically literally one time. I asked TMS doctor present in US the criteria to apply insurance to TMS and he said I need to try four different types of antidepressant and four month of cognitive behavioral therapy. He said these two thing will might make my insurance company insure the benefit of lowering TMS cost than to the regular price of TMS. I have an insurance and currently working to get those two criteria to be met. My doctor in Korea said I need to get 40 times of treatment for a patient like me. Question: Is there a limit to number of times TMS treatments I can get? Because my plan is get as much as I can and pay that price to go back to normal life.

I don't know if there is a limit. Insurance can dictate some of that as well as the criteria to receive treatment. I had been on numerous meds over the course of about 30 years and the last few I tried either didn't work or gave me bad side effects.Keep me posted!!

After the third "round" of TMS treatments that made you well even after a year after getting the treatment, do you still take medications?

bethelbee in reply to ykim21ggcedu

I haven't been on meds in a couple years, became treatment resistant to them after being on them for almost 30 years. The last few I tried either didn't work or gave me bad side effects. The only psych med I take is an occasional Ativan for anxiety.

Hello bethelbee, have you experienced any memory loss after any of your treatments

bethelbee profile image
bethelbee in reply to

No, not at all. Don't know if anyone ever has. I know people who have from ECT(which I will never do) but not from TMS.

in reply to bethelbee

I did a bit of research on ECT and there were some folks who had some sort of memory issue after treatments. I'm very curious about TMS.... thanks for your reply

bethelbee profile image
bethelbee in reply to

That is one of the possible risks of ECT. It is known that some experience memory loss. I've heard it's temporary but have also heard for some it's not.

in reply to bethelbee

Memory loss is my big concern. But I understand that TCM is a bit less invasive due to the use of magnets rather than electric shock. I'll definitely be doing some more research

TMS is not invasive at all. You are awake(unlike ECT where you are asleep) and you are in a comfortable chair. After each treatment, which is only about 20 minutes, you can go about your day. During treatment you feel a tapping against your skull, which is the pulsing of the magnetic stimulation.

It is quite common for people with mental health issues to have both anxiety and depression at the same time. I read a number of years ago that they are basically two sides of the same coin so know you are not alone. The symptoms you are describing are common symptoms of anxiety and even panic disorder.

I also found medication helpful but it also took therapy and investigating why and how I developed my anxiety/depression and how to constructively deal with it.

You might find a therapist that specifically treats anxiety/depression. And you can also help yourself by learning as much as you can about them and how to heal them. A few of the things that have helped me are DARE Anxiety book and youtube videos and also ACT Therapy. There are books and youtube videos available on it.

I have not tried TMS therapy but have read good things about it so I hope it works well for you.

I’ve used these. And for me it seems to have helped me quite a bit. I’ve gone from being an agoraphobic to now getting outside every weekend. I hope this works for you. But just know this is not the end of the line. There is always something else to try. It’s just a matter of finding the right route to take. And I wish you the best of luck❤️

I had accelerated TMS - 50 sessions over 5 days. It didn't help at all. No one has ever suggested getting an EEG to me. Is that really helpful in finding the right treatment?

ykim21ggcedu profile image
ykim21ggcedu in reply to ZetaLovesCats

EEG I had done in Korea. This test shows how brain waves are in your brain. I got tested on this test and my doctor recommended me TMS and I have not really done any real session yet but going to. After EEG test, my doctor explained to me that my brain function is bad to be honest worst and quality of my sleep is also worst and anxiety is shown on EEG result. EEG is just a test to see what parts you need a treatment of not necessarily a treatment but a way to know oh hey I need treatment in this area and go from there. I have not done EEG in US yet but the thing I know is that your brain waves should be green when you get tested with EEG. It means it’s normal. Mine is not. That’s what my test show n me when I got tested on EEG in Korea. So if you do get tested on EEG, just know that if the color is not all green, it means you have problems to treat. Doctor who tested me EEG explained everything to me and I am not sure about here in US but I am sure if you do get tested on EEG it will show something and result that neurology doctor might can explain to you possibly and hopefully and that’s what my doctor in Korea did and maybe google result or show the result to neurologist doctor who might know something and being a profession in that area might can explain. Yes, EEG directs you to the right direction to treatment. EEG result shows what you lack and types of treatment to get you better.
