Anxious about surgery tomorrow

I've had several surguries in the past but tomorrow i go for my shoulder and I'm very anxious. I have noone to go with me during the wait before i go in the operating room and feel so scared and alone. I have a friend picking me up after but wish i had someone with me for support. The staff at the hospital know i get bad anxiety with anesthesia and they said they will help me. I trust them. But i can't think and feel rational. I know I'll be ok. But i can't feel it.

Surgery makes everyone nervous so I think your feelings are normal. Try to keep in mind that it will all be done within the next 24 hours and you will be on the road to healing.

I think most people would be super nervous! I hope the hospital staff is friendly and that things end up being SO much easier than what you worried they'd be.

Dear Caseopia, know that you will be in the best of hands and care both before and after

surgery. I like that time alone before surgery so that I can process my thoughts and clear

my mind. I bring a Meditation tape with as well as doing my breathing. It helps tremendously

in preparing my mind and body for surgery..

Hi Caseopia!! Are you going to have rotator cuff surgery? I had an injury a year ago that caused 2 full thickness tears which required rotator cuff surgery and a few different repairs. I had my surgery in November and I am so glad I did!! I too was anxious but I wasn’t permitted to have anyone with me at the hospital due to the pandemic which was rough but I prayed and meditated and put myself and the surgeons and everything else into God’s hands. Doing so really seemed to help me with my fears and anxiety that day and I felt a warm feeling of comfort wash over me and I knew that I was loved and cared for and protected and that ultimately I would get through the surgery and that I would be alright…that might seem a little simple and I’m not overly religious or anything and so I can’t explain why or how it helped me but it did… letting go takes so much pressure off. But If I lived near you I would be there to hold your hand…it’s so hard feeling very alone in something so difficult as having surgery. I too have felt alone in so many ways in recent years and have spent many sleepless nights with my emotions and anxiety and negative thoughts eating away at me. As a matter of fact its 4:00 AM right now as I write this to you and I’m haunted as usual by insomnia!! Praying and meditation helps me somewhat but not all the time but it might be worth a try, if you haven’t already. Anyway, I’ll be thinking of you today and sending warm, loving vibes and prayers of comfort and healing. I don’t know if that helps at all but it’s nice to know someone is thinking of us and that really, we’re not alone. Also, for me, meditation and self hypnosis for anxiety on YouTube sometimes works too. And believe it or not, ASMR!! For now, I hope you breathe into your belly deeply and that your muscles loosen as you slowly exhale and that you can sense that you’re in God’s hands and that you’re safe as the medicine takes effect and that you trust everything and everyone around you who are lovingly taking good care of you. It’ll be over before you know it and you’ll wake up in the recovery room and you’ll be so glad the surgery is behind you. You got this!!

wow thank you. Its hard to type with my left hand. The right arm is dead right now from a nerve block. I have a s.l.a p tear from injuring myself in my sleep from night terrors. I just had to call a crisis line because of bad side effects from the sedation meds and steroids. Im scared but know ill be ok soon. Im not right in the head right now but i have all your guys support. I have noone really to help me so its hard but its temporary. Thank you again
