Well you try to help and small minded people create fear! There is a 9 year old girl in my avenue, know her since she was a baby. She comes from a poor family, farther in jail sister wont go to school and is a very bad influence on her. They are shunned by all in the avenue. The girls is picked on by all the children and bullied ! She has no friends ! and is called a problem child because her defence is usual aggressive. I have been helping her all her life with little chats and help her out. The summer holidays she has been coming in my garden playing and chatting, me trying to put good thinking into her mind. She goes and feeds my fish helps me check the water etc and look after the fish, I give her little jobs to do give her a few pence as her wages. The other day she said I have only got one friend! I said who,s that she said You !!!! Well the reason for the post a women two doors away from me has been to see her mother and said keep her away from me its not right !!!!!!!!!!

Well done to you. You have seen past all the labels to see the child.

True friendships are not based on what we get from one another. They are based on what we give.

Unfortunately that woman is not very neighbourly and probably thinks a friendship between an grown up and a child can't be good or leads to something bad.

Have faith in yourself and the girl who seems like a diamond the rough.

It is a shame! But I cannot blame only your neighbor. This is labels and stereotypes in minds of people. I don’t know how to deal with them, how to fight them. It is so damaging for this girl and you what happened. I hope it can be worked out! And this girl would not lose you as a only true friend!

Aw Ray that is so unfair and I do feel for you. Strangely enough I am reading Maya Angelou’s first book in her autobiography” I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” and it just reminds me of that, how awfully the white people in it treated the coloured people - they were just so narrow-minded and petty and downright spiteful. It is not your problem, it is your neighbour’s so please carry on being that wee girl’s friend, she really needs you….xx
