It's been 4 years since I have had severe anxiety but this past week was rough. How much does going off birth control affect anxiety?

It's been 4 years since I have had severe anxiety but this past week was rough. I had anxiety for about 5 days where I was uncomfortable going out by myself. on day 5 and 6 I went out with my husband and my family and managed. On day 7 I didn't feel like I had anxiety until it was getting time for me to go to my primary doctor and request a refill on my anxiety meds and to get an emergency supply of birth control. My regular gynecologist seems to have disappeared. He wanted to start me on Lexapro that day. I asked if we can hold off and see how I do when I'm back on the birth control. He seemed annoyed and agreed but told me if I don't follow up with him in 4 weeks he will no longer be treating me. How much does going off birth control affect anxiety? Is it time to go on a daily medication for anxiety? My old gynecologist had told me she could prescribe me Zoloft if I decided I wanted/needed it. I called and made a new appointment with a new gynecologist and the front desk told me she would not prescribe anxiety medication. Guess it's time for a psychiatrist. On a side note, I have a much needed vacation planned for labor day. Wish this would have happened after that!

Agree with the new office. You should see a mental health professional AND a therapist. Many if not most psychiatrists only deal with meds.., you ask for one, the give to you even if the root cause is something else. If it is mental health finding relief is multifaceted.

Webmd is a better place to check for side and withdrawal than anecdotal information. That said hormones do affect mood and birth control affects hormones. They can definitively test and treat that.

A therapist of come sort would be very helpful. They are better at prescribing an anti-anxiety medication that would be garnered towards your needs, while a general physician might just provide you on the spot what they thing could help. It's better to have a more accurate medication.

Hopefully you are able to get everything situated and feel back to normal:)

I'm going to try and look for a female therapist through an online service. I am also thinking of using an online service for my birth control. My current insurance makes me get it through mail order which can sometimes cause a lapse in my prescription. Which I am now very concerned about. I'm going to start a new post about people's experiences with online therapy as there are so many options out there. Thank you for your advice!
