I just replied to a post with a memory, and thought it might be good to share with more people: Here goes.....
Even Therapists have bad days. Imagine if your whole work day, every day, was spent listening to unhappy or negative people, then going home and wondering if you really make any difference in your career because your patients don't seem to improve (much). Being a therapist is a HIGH burn-out job. They are human too, looking for a little light in the darkness of their patients' weary eyes, and trying not to let everyone's problems "get to them".
Once, years ago, I decided a counseling session wouldn't be about ME. I sat down, looked at my counselor, and with complete sincerity, I said, "How are YOU today?" Then I just shut up and listened. It was late afternoon and she looked tired. I told her so. She literally shared openly that she has some hard days, searching for words that will help a patient "turn the corner" and improve, and she gets "down" sometimes like everyone else, and sometimes BECAUSE of others. I totally got it. I jokingly said something like, "Some people are just crazy". I remember laughing with her a few times in my session. Focusing on someone else really helped ME. I ended our time by telling her there was "no charge" for my services this time, we laughed, hugged, and I helped both of us. 😊
