I started taking lexapro three days ago at 5mg. The side effects of increased anxiousness really hit me today and tonight I had a panic attack and couldn’t sleep. My doctor wants me to increase to the 10 mg today on day 4 but I am nervous with the side effects I already have that it will just worsen it. 3 days seems aggressive to maybe?

Increasing Lexapro
Hi there, could it possibly be that you’re very anxious over starting medication rather than a side effect? If so then try to relax and let it do it’s job (obviously easier said than done , I know !! ) but just a thought . Speak to your dr straight away if the anxiety dosnt subside, that’s important. I’m on lexapro and have found it very good and it’s good for anxiety as well . But medications can work differently in people so please speak to your dr. I was on sertraline , another common antidepressant, and my anxiety got much worse , so I’ve switched to lexapro and it’s working well for me . Don’t know much about the different medications but wanted to reach out to you . You aren’t alone on this journey of healing from depression that’s for sure . Hope you’re feeling better soon 💕
Hi BlueVibes...Try to stay positive when taking any medication. Our minds are powerfuland as "Mumma h" stated that is what can attribute to the anxious feeling and not the
medication itself. Until you are on a therapeutic dose for 4-6 weeks will you start feeling
the full benefits.
5mg is really less than a starting dose. I had started on 10mg and moved up to 15mg.
I have found for myself, Lexapro being a good med which gave me my life back with
no drowsiness, no side effects. Stay positive while your doctor builds the dose which
is right for you.
Do not fear it. Accept this medication (or any other one you are one) as a stepping stone
in feeling better as each week goes by. Good Luck. Be Patient xx
Hi BlueVibes... I felt exactly the same way. Just the idea of a new medication and changing the dosage makes one anxious. It does take a while for any positive change to be noticed and yes we want a good change to happen sooner than later. Speak to your Doctor about your concerns. Don't be surprised if he indicates that you may have to wait and see for 4 to 6 weeks. I am on 10 mg and it has made a world of difference for me. It is a journey we are on when taking these type of meds. Look after yourself, walking and meditation help. Stay positive. 💕
Hi BlueVibes. I don't understand why your doctor want to increase your dose when you are having adverse resction better on the initial dose. I've had that problem. I contact my pharmacist and they usually advise me to cut the dose by half, in your case 2.5mg and take that for a good week and gradually increase the dose. Listen to your body. This is precisely what I hate the most about antidepressants. We know there's some kind of chemical imbalance going on, there are no medical tests to diagnose what's off balance, by how much or what would be the best medication to treat us. I feel so much like it's a shot in the dark with medication. They want me to hand over my brain and trust them but can't respond to any questions I have in a scientifically sound, medically reassuring manner. Does anyone else feel like me?
I have gone from 5mg of Lexipro to 20mg a day over about three months. Everyone is different but for me there was an adjustment period. Overall, very well worth it. I stayed in touch with my doctors about any reactions and that let me relax about increasing the dose. But I never had a repeated bad reaction and if I did I would have reduced the amount or been concerned has you have been. Best wishes.
