How do you manage your anxiety?

FutureChangeAgent14 profile image

Hi everyone,

This is my first time on anything like this and I am a bit nervous. I get very anxious about a lot of things in life and I tend to overthink. Currently, I'm a full-time student and working a tough job. Lately, I haven't been feeling like myself. I feel the overthinking overwhelming me at times and my heart drops at the smallest inconveniences. I was wondering, what are some of the things you all do to manage your anxiety?

Well first welcome to the group I was nervous about posting at 1st but everyone here is so supportive.... Anyways here are was I work through my anxiety, I have meds for it but when I forget them and feel anxious I focus on a clock and tap my chest (the left side) in beat with the ticks soon your heart rate will slow down. But most importantly just take a moment and breathe when people are anxious they sometimes forget they need to breathe I hope this helps

I am a 64 Yr old and have had agoraphobia and general anxiety for many years. My situation has improved a lot however, you may think lockdown was an Agoraphobics dream but it has been a part in old feelings returning and I'm working hard to get back to better times. Walking very locally seems to help as well as regular meds. Practice, image therapy and the like are all good for me.

Hello and good for you for having the courage to join. I think the biggest thing that helped me with my anxiety was learning that I had been approaching it all wrong and instead learning to accept the anxious thoughts and feelings instead of fighting or trying to control them. I've found the DARE Anxiety book and youtube videos very helpful and they also have a phone app that I like, it's kind of like having my own coach. Also, learning and practicing simple mindfulness to be able to detach from my thoughts and let them flow in and out is very helpful for the anxious thinking and being able to be present more in life.

You might try being kinder and compassionate with yourself and give yourself a break when you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed. As an over-achiever this was something that took me years to learn, to put my own mental and physical needs first.

How do I manage my anxiety? Not very well. After 20+ years on meds I had to come off due to a skin reaction. Withdrawal was awful, but I have vowed not to go back on meds. Don't get me wrong....meds have their place and purpose. Sometimes they are necessary. But sometimes I think the meds are like the "Thank you for smoking" movie. It's all a scam by big pharma to get and keep you hooked. Again....please don't get me wrong....get meds if you need them..there is nothing wrong with that. I did that for 20+ years to function at work. Now that I am retired, I want to try doing it on my own. Wish me luck. Suggestions are always helpful.

I took meds for about a year, but the side effect of constant headaches wasn't worth it! I'm trying to figure out how to do it "naturally". Enjoy your retirement!

Let me know if you come up with anything natural that helps. Does marijuana count as natural? 🤔😏

I have been disabled all my life, working mainly part time jobs, I have epilepsy, over 50 years with it, the seizures started via stress and anxiety, over 400+ of the buggers, although it was the reactions and side effects of the medication that caused a lot of my problems, thus trying to find natural solvers rather than those 'pills' is always my aim! In circa. 2010 I was taking ten different pills, pills to clear effects of other pills! Thankfully my present medication is probably my best🤞and I hopefully will be enjoying my retirement in a couple of months👍

I unfortunately have bad anxiety all day every day. I'm supposed to take anxiety medicine but it makes be too tired. I was taught several breathing tequniques however one stuck out in particular that I still use. I close my eyes. And when I inhale, I picture colors that are relaxing and peaceful to me. Then I exhale, and think of colors not relaxing and stressful and release those feelings. It helps for me. There are times if my anxiety is really bad, I just keep telling myself I'm safe over and over again.
