This is the first time I've been prescribed anything. It's only a low dose and I took it for the first time last night and so far there hasn't been any adverse side effects. It does seem to have worked a little.
I guess I'm just wondering what others experiences are with this? I didn't even know beta blockers could be given for anxiety

Propranolol helps my daughter. Since it is a beta-blocker, it lowers the heart rate. It is a lot easier for my daughter to manage her anxiety without her heart racing. I like that it works fast and is not addictive. Also, my daughter has had no negative side effects. However, I do not know how well it works long term. My daughter feels like it may not be working as well as it used to and she has been taking it for about 5 months.I think it is worth a try, you might need some time to get the right dose, but you should know pretty soon if it is helpful or not.
I was just prescribed it, too. It helps somewhat, but I still feel the mental anxiety. I use it at times to avoid taking lorazepam. I'm in the process of finding the right anxiety meds, so these are just temporary, to help me get through.
Yeah I think this is temporary for me too, so they can figure out what's right for me. Again, it helps, but like you said the mental anxiety can still be felt. I hope we both find what we're looking for and get through
I'm currently taking the extended release version of it for lowering my blood pressure and so far, I have had no side effects.
The med that helped with my anxiety was klonopin but they don't like prescribing it long term and I got off it.
I personally have found that meds can help manage the anxiety but they don't eliminate it. For that I needed to learn what anxiety really is and how to accept the anxious thoughts and feelings. I found the youtube videos of Dr. Claire Weekes and The DARE Anxiety book, program and youtube videos very helpful.
Thank you for the resources! I haven't really thought much about anxious thoughts, as relieving the physical feeling was my primary goal, but at the end of the day that's not really getting at the source. So thank you again, this is really helpful
You're welcome. Usually anxiety works the other way around, it's our thoughts or interpretation of the anxious feelings that create and perpetuate the anxiety.
Some of the things that can physically contribute to anxiety are when your hormones, thyroid or adrenals are out of balance and not functioning properly.
Propranolol is a brilliant drug for anxiety. It won’t take the anxiety in your head away but it helps with the symptoms. It stops you producing Adrenalin which causes you to go into fight or flight mode. So it helps with the physical symptoms. I’ve been on it 10 years and it’s a medicine I will use for life. It really helps. However it lowers your blood pressure and if you take too much you will feel light headed. It took me a while to understand how much I need. When Mt anxiety is stable I just take 20mg a day of it. If it’s not I’ll take 40. HTH x
HEY, i hope you are doing amazing. Well let me tell you about your concern about taking medication, I am not a medical expert but I will not a big fan of medication to treat psychological issues, they put a negative effect on your mind insisted on good. Instart you might find it helpful but these medicines have the worst side effects along with mood swings. Effects may vary depending on the situation or person. i always suggest psychotherapy/sessions for early-stage treatment. Or you should try the combination method ( CBT/session + medicine ).
