i feel stupid and defeated in dealing with online Banks/commodities,and had enough

I really feel so fed up in trying my best understanding online banking and similar commodities.

I often feel way out on a limb and i feel totally stupid, and now with so many banks and societies closing its impossible to see someone face to face, and in my opinion doing financial things on line is fraught with problems, just one mistaken click and you are boogered.

When you could go into a bank or society and discuss things with a person, instead of talking to a machine, life was so much more pleasant and easier.

Frankly i believe these institutions are responsible for many nervous breakdowns and worse, for i know the past two days i have been so near the edge i felt sure i was heading for a mental breakdown, and i still do,for i really cannot handle much more.

Worry and stress cause everything.

Hi Secrets22, I am not a fan member of online transactions either. I am now using the call centres where I can. What is stupid, is that pre-recorded message that XYZ values your business but gets you to wait for what seems forever. I guess its better than nothing.

I agree with you 100%. Both my husband and myself have been tearing our hair out over online banking from time to time. Even our eldest daughter who is in her twenties has had difficulties with it.

I would wholeheartedly agree in person was so much easier and even safer.

Oh how I agree with you as I hate the current everything online way of life as well. I refuse to do online banking or anything too complicated as it makes my brain ache so I either go in person or ring up instead.

Having said that as I am retired I rarely need to do it online as all my bills are automatically paid by direct debit. The only time I had to recently was around a year ago when I had to pay my plumber with cash. As he had put a new floor in the bathroom, ripped out my old suite, installed a new one and done various other jobs I needed to draw out a large amount of cash from my savings.

The disadvantage of this of course was that I was returning from town with around £1,200 cash so did feel a bit vulnerable.

I absolutely hate it when people like that want cash. I won't do business with them if there is competition which there always is. For one thing you have no recourse if he starts the job and never finishes it. I am getting floors and it is half up front in any number of ways. I hope he did a good job.

I paid some as he went along with the bulk when he finished it. It was very hard getting anyone due to covid as it was an emergency because of nasty leaks. The only other quote was for twice that amount including VAT.

Online and phone banking are great for basic things but not for important ones when only face to face will do.

Here in Cardiff they have shut down a number of suburban branches like the nat west in Splott Road, the one in Rumney, the one at the Heath hospital, the Cardiff bay one but the profitable ones have been kept open like Canton, llanishen and the city centre branches and I did hear rumours that the Roath branch near where I live has shut down.

To me it's no problem to walk into the city centre bit for those who live in the suburbs who are reliant on using buses and have young children and need to go into town then it's not fun!

Know that one; Only one in my SW Wales town too!

in reply toMidori

Found out no the Roath branch hasn't shut down altogether it was shut for a few days to be refurbished!

It's bad though how many pubs have closed down recently!

That's a relief, but bad the pubs are going!

Yes a pub I went to for a weekly quiz also closed down and I really miss it.

Penylan in Cardiff no longer has a pub after the three brewers shut down back in 2019 and has been pulled down to be made into housing.

hypercat54 in reply to

Oh dear. Fortunately I live in an area with half a dozen pubs within 5 minutes walking distance. It's lovely...

in reply tohypercat54

Where I live there are other pubs to go to and one I enjoy is called the Claude which isn't too far to walk to that has something for everyone.

The three brewers used to be great back in the 90s when I was in my 20s and the chap who ran it back then was great and his wife and her sister worked behind the bar and we would go there most Sunday's as well in the days when alcopops were in vogue like Metz which I used to enjoy.

Sadly they left and the place went to rack and ruin until they shut in 2019.

There's a pub across the road called the Royal Oak which is good for a quick drink and is a listed building!

As long it has good prices, nice customers etc. I don't care if it's listed or not! You don't notice it after a few drinks anyway as you are listing yourself :D

We live in a small town in Wales and we’ve gone from having four banks down to just one, which is nt my bank, my nearest is half an hour away and I don’t drive so if I need to got to the bank it’s waiting for a lift, or catching the bus, our old bank was always busy and people used to queue there so their excuse that it wasn’t being used is ridiculous, I do do telephone banking because of this , but not online banking

Snap,i live in a small town and all Banks are now gone, and the neighbouring small towns have no banks now either, and my nearest bank is now Bristol ,and Bristol is hell to navigate, plus parking is horrendous.I wont do it.

in reply tosecrets22

Yes Bristol city does get busy doesn't it?

I haven't been to Bristol since just before everything shut down back in March 2020 when we went to the M shed museum on the docks.

I 100% agree it has got to the point when life depends on endless lines of numbers, banks closing down, for "greater security" put ... more numbers, you want to shop, have you got your club card [actually refused service from a well known supermarket] had the money but no club card🥴 YOU MUST REMEMBER THESE NUMBERS....😤🤬🥴🥴🤬 ATM you must remember these numbers..🙃😜🤬🥴 As you say get one number wrong, start over again, get it wrong three times☠️☠️If it is any consolation secrets22 there are quite a few of us😩out there!👍me included!😤"Worry and stress cause everything."

Only memberships business like costco would refuse your business without a card and even then they can look you up. For numbers I save them in a password safe. if that is no good you could write down and memory aid and put it in your wallet. Not the end of the world. They still have to have your card.

Try Tescos offered money, cost card only?

Blueruth profile image
Blueruth in reply toAdlon57

I tried their website. You mean their club card? Pay another way or load it up. I think you are a being little dramatic. Last I checked we live in a capitalist society.

Ok!not a good day! put all my weekly shopping out "Do you have a club card, club card only!" had to put all my shopping back in the trolley, I could feel her looking at me, a miniscule little blue sign, 'Club card only', what ever happened to good old money, maybe a witty remark about local events, weather, that sort of thing? No just zombie expressions, "Do you need any bags , sir?" If I used their cards for my weekly shopping, I would be there all day, then I WOULD be a nervous mental wreck!🙃🤪🙄

Oh so wrong line. If it makes you feel better I was turned down for a Covid booster because “corporate didn’t say they could offer it” even though the health department has said they can’t turn anyone down AND corporate sent out emails inviting people in. Spineless.

Vulnerably disabled 2nd jab 27th April, probably get a booster for a christmas present, in gud ole N.I. we are ALWAYS last in the UK!🙄

Only reason I am eligible before most places is because I live in a high risk state. So I would be okay waiting in a low risk state. People have gotten lazy about masks including myself. I bet you have access before then. Manufacturing is better. I think all of US will be able to by 25th.

Blueruth profile image
Blueruth in reply toAdlon57

Money is just a construct anyway. An agreed way to exchange goods and services. What about lugging good old gold or silver? Even houseless don’t need cash. It is safer for them and you need a phone if you are houseless. Cash will still be backup but only one line probably. Amazon and apple stores don’t even have registers and therefore… no lines.

What about a credit union? They are smaller and tend to have branches. They are also cheaper than national banks and you are a member so you kind of have a voice. My CU is bigger but still local. They have branches with people for bigger things like mortgages. Fidelity and Schwab both have people you get to right away and they spend time with you. Both have banking accounts. Schwab's is actually very good.

Midori profile image

There are a few Credit Unions in UK, but not many. I personally think they are an excellent idea.

Blueruth profile image
Blueruth in reply toMidori

Anyone in the US who is smart enough to do research knows they are so much cheaper and less problematic in their ethics. There are limitations such as international travel benefits. It is worthwhile to have two.

I have not had a 'holiday' in over seven years! The money I have coming in is £3000 below the national average! I have been officially disabled since 2013, not fit enough for any work! My ex-bank I had been with since 1973, which had to close due to technology 'upgrades', if I wanted to visit a branch I would have had to pay for transport, ten miles away! I am sorry I am not under the glove of the gud ole USA!🥱

Blueruth profile image
Blueruth in reply toAdlon57

I’m sorry you are disabled. If you were officially disabled in the US it would only be after hiring an attorney to fight it. Then you gotta find a doctor which has to be a doctor that will to take Medicare. You see the pay is not only substandard… the paperwork is a total nightmare. In some states hospitals and doctors just stopped providing care. There are absurd stories of people avoiding doctors over preventable diabetes care and ending up with amputated feet… which of course means they are now disabled. Why? because they can’t pay the bills. Not trying to get on your case. We have a lot of messed up problems too. 7usd is minimum wage. People are begging for 15/hour. That’s less than 2k pounds a month pre tax and we are talking mothers. Housing around me is 2k for a tiny 1 bedroom that is not walking distance to anything.

As for me… I either leave the country or take the risk that I could lose all my savings over a single medical event. All it takes is one bad accident to lose your savings. And I know I am lucky. I am definitely not complaining because I can leave. But that is the reason it matters to me.

My problem is that I am stuck in 'area' I cannot stand. I cannot move because I am and always have been disabled, my relatives all have roots in this area, I love them very much but does not help my situation, I don't have any money, now essentially 'terminally ill' living like an egg in a cracked egg shell, [after having epilepsy for over 50 years 400+ seizures, my next one officially will be my last!] nearing my full retirement age, hopefully with an increase in finances? Probably too late now for my dream to emigrate🥴I would love to travel and visit and holiday BUT? I still have ambition but my body says no😤🥴
