Halloween is my Favorite Holiday; and Here's Why

For those who do like Halloween, I've found they typically liked it because of fond memories, whether that be dressing up, candy, decorating or just seeing the decorations, and more. I've always had a love for costumes. But I think I loved it differently compared to other people. Kids dressed up as super heroes, medieval figures, animals, or creatures and characters from their favorite movies and shows. They did this because they wanted to pretend to be these figures. I wanted to BE the things I dressed up as. I dressed up as Darth Vader because I wanted power, I wanted control or some semblance of it in my upside down life. I dressed up as Harry Potter because I wanted the friendships he had. I dressed up as a Jedi because I wanted the ability to find peace and instill it in others. I dressed up as Iron Man because I wanted the money to end my poverty, I wanted the armor so that people couldn't hurt me anymore. From seventh grade through all of highschool, the only costume I wore was a dark sweatshirt, a pair of jeans, and a green led purge mask. This is when I first realized that I wanted to be faceless, nameless, an enigma. I have body issues and hallucinations make looking in mirrors torture. If it was up to me now, I would wear that mask every single day, and never take it off. I felt safe. I never feel safe. The security it gave me was so odd. So now, once a year, I get to wear my mask, I get to feel safe, I get to be hidden from the eyes of everyone else.

I hear you Lefty Epee I've always loved Halloween. As a kid I went for the candy. As an adult, I enjoy watching the little ones so excited and so precious. (especially since

there isn't that much innocence in today's child) For one day, they can be anyone they

want and get treats as well.

As for the mask part, I too am starting to get a little too comfortable wearing my mask

everywhere because of Covid. It does feel safe behind that mask. People now seem

to be afraid of each other and avoid interacting. So I can totally understand you feeling

safe and hidden behind that mask.

One day hopefully, we will all be free of hiding behind something. We need to prepare

now in how we will go about our life, free and not hidden. :) xx
