How do you know when it’s time to see a therapist ?

How do you know when you should talk to a Dr about going about treatment for clinical depression? I struggle with it daily, yet I have never seen a therapist and quite frankly I’m scared they would tell me it’s just hormones and that theirs nothing wrong with me. I’m also scared to tell my parents that I need help. My family looks down on mental health, because they themselves don’t struggle with it. My family doesn’t understand that I cannot do this alone and that I need something to change.

So a therapist and doctor are two different things. A therapist cannot prescribe anything. It is very rare that a doctor will work through problems with you. Their training is in meds.

My advice (I am not a professional so for what it is worth) is to see a therapist and talk it through. Disclaimer…common advice is to talk to a psychiatrist who is a doctor that specializes in mental treatment. The reason I hesitate is because, quite frankly, they are in the business of prescribing drugs. To answer your question they will not tell you it is just hormones. They will give you an RX.

A therapist will help you work through your questions about mental health. They can help you decide if you want to explore medication. They will not tell you there is nothing wrong because literally everyone needs to talk to someone and often not a family member. They may even be able to help you deal with your family.

I second this! 💕 Hoping the best for you!

I think your advice is very good. I wouldn't recommend those who prescribe drugs as a first port of call either.

Hi todays, I’m sorry to hear that your family look down on mental health. Mental health cannot be taken too lightly. If you had been struggling for a while and exercising and other activities doesn’t help, you should go seek for professional help.

Thank you for sharing. You are correct you can't do this on your own. Have you been to a doctor to let him know how you are feeling? Depression is both chemical and how we think. It is a real disease and you are not making it up. Often you need both medication along with counseling to feel better. Hormones do affect mental health as well, so finding the right combination will help you feel better. I have struggled on and off for years. What really helps me is positive self-talk. I will feel better, I am ok, this is only temporary. Here is an article(bit.ly/3DsQrAM) about depression that you might find helpful. I will be praying for you. Hugs and God Bless
