Treated differently because I’ve got depression

Has anyone else felt like they are treated differently because of their depression. Just at the time I feel I need support, people around me have distanced themselves from me which has made my depression worse.

When you are depressed you sometimes are very sensitive or take things the wrong way. I'm sure it's nothing personal. They think they are walking on eggshells. You should openly ask them why they are distancing and give them tips on subjects that are easy for you to talk about. Hope this helps! Hugs!

Hi- I think it’s because of social distance that causes the people around you to distance themselves from you. If you need their help, try to ask them by sending messages through text or call them.

If you have a friend that you can trust to talk about your true feelings, it would be great. You can also write down your thoughts in your journal to help you release the sadness you are going through. It’s like talking to a friend.

Continue to share, we are here for you. I hope you can get the help you need to stay well. God bless.

Oh heck yes! People just don't get it. Sure, all everyone gets depressed from time to time. But when it's a chronic medical condition it's sometimes treated like there's " something wrong " with you. Biochemicaly yes. But it's not wrong. You're expected to " get over it " like a cold or something.

I've gotten tired of covering up or explaining depression to others.

I agree completely! I had a friend leave me at my worst because of my diagnosis, which landed me in the hospital. I even struggle finding a doctor I actually like because I don't feel comfortable talking to them. I have been through 5 primary care doctors now, still trying to find one I feel comfortable with! My heart goes out to you, that's why I joined this group. ❤

Dear lilacbutterfly12. You are not alone. Ever. The true friends in life will be attracted to you and your challenges. Hang in; they will appear. I'd bet that your sensitivities, and every human has them, give you great empathy toward others. What matters is that you are a beautiful person, you are a precious gift to the world, and now, you will never be alone. You are in good company because the rest of us have been through many bad days, months, years. We know that your brain chemistry is just one aspect of your humanity. And your depression is not "you." I'm sure that you have SO much to offer the world. Welcome.

Hey boo. Yes, I've been there. Depression is a real and serious thing, and sometimes all you want is comfort. It hurts when you get treated differently because you're just drowsy and don't want to do anything. But sometimes, I think being by yourself and dealing with depression by yourself makes you stronger. You realize you don't have anybody else and you have to fight for your happinesss. & I think if you fight depression by yourself you can fight for anything and it's a serious accomplishment. I'm here if anything love!

Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there who are only fair weather friends. They're your friend when things are going great and you're fun to be around and all that, but the second you're in a jam and you really need help and you're struggling with God-forbid depression, you can watch them take off!!!! But people who really care about you, they will be there for you through thick and thin. So if you've had some fake friends ditch you, consider it good riddance. They were never really quality friends in the first place.
